As the years go by and as the feminist and LGBTQ+ movements begin to grow, people are slowly beginning to question the hegemonic gender roles and the way in which children are to be raised. In this context, it’s more common for parents to choose to raise their children in a gender-neutral environment. The main argument behind this is that if we raise our kids without reproducing gender stereotypes, they will feel free and safe in whatever identity they choose. Here’s a list of 20 brave celebrity parents who have chosen to raise their kids without gender stereotypes. Let’s hope they’re an inspiration for the rest of the world!

#20. Dean McDermott

Dean McDermott is a Canadian-American actor, most famous for his participation in reality TV shows such as Chopped Canada and The Gourmet Dad. He married the 90210 actress Tori Spelling in 1988, and they’ve had six children together.

In 2012, McDermott publicly defended his son’s choice of getting a pedicure. “He asked if he could get his nails painted like mom and his sister Stella. I gladly obliged him“, he wrote on his blog. That kid is lucky to have a father that respects his decisions!

Bryce Dallas Howard is a talented American actress and director, famous for her roles in the drama film The Help and the mini-series Jurassic World. In 2006, she married actor Seth Gabel, with whom she had two children.

Dallas Howard lets her daughters dress and express themselves in the way they want, even if it means having no hair at all. When being asked about her older daughter, Beatrice, she stated the following:

She was bald for a very long time, and so gender [was]a little unclear. But that was fine, and there was no problem. I really wanted to wait for her to lead me in a certain direction“.

Dascha Polanco is a Dominican actress who reached worldwide fame after portraying character Dayanara Diaz on the series Orange Is the New Black. She has a son and a daughter, and the latter played a younger version of her character in the fifth season of the mentioned TV series.

Polanco describes herself as a “free-range parent“. She was also asked about her mothering style on an interview by People on the Celeb Parents Get Real segment. On that occasion, she stated that her pre-teen and teenage daughters Aryam and Dasani would grow to be independent and that both of them would be “embracing their individuality” in “gender-neutral homes“. Way to go, Dascha!

Jaime King is an American actress and model, famous for her roles in Pearl HarborSin City, and Escape Plan. She married filmmaker Kyle Newman in 2007, with whom she had two children. Her mother has always been a major LGBTQ+ rights advocate, and she has followed her path.

Not only does King raise her kids in a gender-neutral way, but she has also launched the world’s first gender-neutral children’s clothing line, called Gardner and the Gang. “Why can’t kids just explore and be who they are?“, King pointed out in an interview by Stylecaster.

#16. Paloma Faith

Paloma Faith is an English singer, songwriter, and actress, famous for her debut album, Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful? She is currently in a relationship with Leyman Lachine and became a mother in 2016. She has publicly commented on her mothering style a couple of times.

As she told The Mirror in 2016: “I’m loving being a mum. I want two or three kids in all, and they will all be gender-neutral“. She reaffirmed her political stance the following year when she told the Thompson Reuters Foundation I don’t differentiate gender because I don’t believe you should to a young child“.

Russell Brand is an English actor, comedian, and radio host, famous for his leading role in the comedy-drama film Forgetting Sarah Marshall and for working as a voice actor in the animated saga Despicable Me. He is currently married to Laura Gallacher and is the father of two children.

Before his first child was born, he opened up in The Jonathan Ross Show and expressed how he would like to raise a baby: “I may not even ever impose a gender upon it, let the child grow up and be whatever the hell it is, never tell it there is such a concept“. He is a man of convictions since he doesn’t dress his daughter with the traditional clothes associated with femininity.

Delfino raises her children in a gender-neutral way. When asked about her daughter Cecilia, she said the following:

“We didn’t really allow a lot of princess-y stuff into the house. Not a lot of pink and all that,” she said of her daughter Cecilia. “I always try to buy her clothes that I could give to her brother after, so it’s always gender-neutral, and she is offended when I give her a skirt now. I thought that was interesting“.

Olivia Wilde is an American actress, director, and producer, most famous for portraying the role of Remy Hadley on the medical TV series House. She is engaged with the actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis, with whom she has two children.

Wilde has confessed that her older son, Otis, has taken an interest in Disney’s princesses, and she feels super happy with that. As she told People in 2018, “He loves Moana, obviously, and when he thinks about Moana, he thinks of himself as Moana“. She also added that he doesn’t judge things like pink, dancing, or gymnastics as feminine or “girly”, just like everyone else shouldn’t!

In 2018, she launched a gender-neutral children’s clothing brand, following the steps of fellow artist Jamie King. As she said to CNN, “It’s about giving [children]freedom. Freedom of expression. Pink claims that she lives in a label-less household, and she has commented on the way she raises her children on several occasions.

In July 2017, she mentioned them in one of her Instagram posts and referred to them as “they”, the pronoun preferred for gender-neutral people. She has also publicly supported gay marriage and LGBTQ+ rights on numerous occasions, which makes us believe that her kids will be in good hands if they ever choose a non-cis-heterosexual identity.

Gwen Stefani is an American singer, songwriter, and producer, famous for being the leading vocalist of the rock band No Doubt. She is famous for major hits such as Don’t Speak, It’s My Life and The Sweet Escape. In 2002, she married English singer Gavin Rossdale, with whom she had three children.

Stefani has publicly spoken about the way she chooses to raise her kids. Her oldest son, Kingston, for instance, likes tutus and enjoys painting his nails and she is proud to encourage him to do so. In fact, she once confessed that she loves that her son likes painting his nails pink and that he sees it as a cool thing.

Will Smith is an American actor and rapper, most famous for his roles in Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, both of which earned him Academy Award nominations. In 1997 he married actress Jada Pinkett and they had two children together.

Smith has always been a relaxed parent. Because of this, his children Jaden and Willow have felt free to express themselves in whichever way they wish. In fact, his older son Jaden usually wears “female-gendered” clothes such as dresses and skirts, and Smith fully supports him.
