19. He Decided To Buy A Ticket
Earl Livingston was an eighty-seven-years-old man that was living in New Jersey. Earl was watching the morning news when he heard about the $1.6 Billion Mega Millions jackpot.
Earl lived a long and peaceful life and he was never a fan of gamble and lucky games. It was a surprise to everyone that he decided to go downtown and buy a ticket for the lottery. He picked up his coat and left to go buy his lottery ticket. Then something unexpected happened.
18. He Fell
Earl was almost there but while crossing a street in New Jersey, he slipped and fell… The poor man broke his hip and he needed to go see a doctor as soon as possible… All of this, without a ticket…
17. Arriving At The Hospital
The doctor as well as the hospital member were amazed to hear from Earl that he fell while trying to buy a lottery ticket. As Earl niece says: “He told them he was on his way to buy a lottery ticket and he was disappointed that he didn’t get it,” she said.
16. They Felt Bad For Him
The hospital staff and especially Kristine Trotter, a physicians assistant, and Steve Gurley, a nurse, felt bad for him and decided to do something that would cheer him up. Why don’t you go in with us? We’re also buying a lottery ticket.’”
15. They Invited Him In Their Lottery
The hospital staff decided to let Earl to buy a ticket for their lottery as well as allow him to be in the room where the poll would be placed, if his condition was improved. Earl accepted the offer with joy!
14. Hospital’s Lottery
The hospital was holding a lottery with a grand price of $1,000,000 and only the staff of the hospital were allowed to participate. But it seems that there was room for one more, making the 141 participants, 142.
13. Time For The Winner
A week after Earl’s fall was the day that the numbers would be drawn. Everyone was excited and the staff wholeheartedly welcomed Earl in the event. Everyone was sitting on the edge of their seat when the numbers were about to be announced.
12. Earl Won!
Everyone was shocked to hear that Earl had just won $1,000,000! Earl couldn’t believe how lucky he was to win and almost fainted. Luckily he was in the hospital already!
11. Lucky & Unlucky
Earl admitted how lucky he was even though his bad luck while trying to buy the original ticket for the first lottery. It seems that everything happened for a reason and he was more than grateful as he said:
“I want to thank everybody. I appreciate very much and God bless you and have a happy, happy long life,” Earl said.
10. His Family Didn’t Believe Him
When Earl returned home, his family though that the old man had lost its mind. They didn’t believe him and they had to see for themselves to be persuaded. Later after contacting the hospital, they realized that Earl was telling the truth!
“I didn’t believe him when I got here,” his niece said. “I thought he was confused, maybe from pain meds.”
Mickle said. “I thought he was confused, maybe from pain meds. And then the staff came into the room and they were saying congratulations. And I was like, ‘Wow, he really did win.’”
9. They Were Excited
It’s obvious that his family as well as Earl were more than excited with the outcome of his “accident”. To the family’s surprise, the staff members ecstatic to see Earl being so happy about it.
8. Kristine Posted A Photo
Kristine Trotter who was Earl’s supervisor during his stay at the hospital posted a photo with her and Earl holding the winning ticket!
7. A Group Photo
The hospital staff proved to be overly excited that their department had won the lottery and invited Earl to pose with them in a big giant group photo outside of the hospital!
6. Earl’s Hip
Even though Earl had just won $1,000,000 that wasn’t something that could help his hip recover faster. It appeared that his little accident was more serious than he thought and that it could take him a long time to recover from it.
5. Hip Replacement
Ultimately the doctors realized that Earl needed a hip replacement procedure in order for him to recover faster and without a lot of pain. After the necessary tests, Earl was ready for the surgery.
4. A Success
Earl’s surgery was a big success! Even though this type of procedure isn’t something dangerous, given Earl’s age, doctors were afraid of complications that luckily never happened. What a lucky man!
3. He Didn’t Care Much
Earl couldn’t care less! After all he had just won $1,000,000 to spend for him and his family. But Earl decided to do something amazing!
2. He Decided To Donate
Earl decided to donate a large percentage of his money to the hospital, thanking them for their care as well as the chance they gave him to participate in the lottery. Without them he couldn’t have won the money after all.
