Another Normal Day
It was just another ordinary day in the life of Jessee Diaz when suddenly, his life changed for good.
He was at work sorting through some cartons of donations at the San Diego facility when he noticed that one of the boxes contained a tempura fryer and a strange roll of tin foil paper.
A Mysterious Finding
At first, Diaz thought of throwing it away, but then she decided to unwrap the tin foil and find out what was hidden inside. “I was about to throw it in the trash, actually,” said Jessee. “I thought it was just trash.” What she found inside, took her breath away!

Five Envelopes
While she was unwrapping the tin foil, Jessee was fully unaware of what was hidden inside. She started to get anxious, and after opening it, she found five envelopes with a huge amount of money inside.
“That’s when I saw five envelopes inside the tin foil with tons of hundreds and fifties,” said Diaz.
The Right Thing To Do
It would be a tough decision for anyone who had found that the amount of money not to think of themselves.
However, Jessee didn’t think twice! “There’s a lot of people who depend on us, and it’s just the right thing to do. I didn’t think twice,” said Jessee.
A Huge Amount Of Money
Immediately, Jesse informed her manager about her findings, and they started counting the money together.
It took them a long time to count all of them, and the total ended up being $46,400. “It probably took us like 45 minutes. It was nonstop,” Diaz told us.
Searching For The Man Behind
After counting, the manager decided that they had to find the rightful owner of the money. With that in mind, the Goodwill’s loss prevention team started searching through that day’s donation receipt when they finally found the one they were looking for.
On the receipt was written the name Debra Colarusso.
The Call
Due to the receipt, the Goodwill’s loss prevention team believed that Debra Colarusso might be the money owner as she had donated the tempura fryer to them.
So they decided to make a phone call to inform her about their findings.
The Owner
They discovered from the phone call that the tempura fryer belonged to Debra’s mother-in-law, Michiko, who was 79.
They found out that Michiko was dealing with problems of memory loss caused after her husband died.
Donating
Michiko owned many things, and her family and Colarusso decided that they should donate some to make more space.
So that’s why they donated the tempura fryer being unaware of the treasure that was hidden inside.
Returning The Money
Toni Giffin, CEO of Goodwill, arranged a meet up with Colarusso to return the huge amount of money that she and her family had given to them without knowing.
“I think you might have donated a little bit more than you anticipated,” Giffin said to Debra.
Speechless
When Giffin gave her the envelope with the $46,400, at first, Colarusso stood there, unable to speak.
“Oh, my goodness. Oh my goodness, forty-six thousand dollars?” Colarusso shouts out.
Hidden Spot
No one knew about that saving spot except Michiko and her husband, who started saving money for many years to visit their family who lived in Japan because that trip was expensive.
“It was their secret squirrel account,” Colarusso said.
Grateful
Colarusso felt grateful towards Diaz because not many people would have done the right thing by returning the money to its owner. Without Diaz, Colarusso and her family would have lost a huge amount of money.
“I don’t know what to say. Thank you so much,” Colarusso said to Diaz.
Act Of Selflessness
Diaz must become a role model for anyone due to her selflessness that made her give the money back without a second thought.
Without her doing the right thing, a huge amount of money would have ended up in the wrong hands.

After the couple reported their findings, the man drove all the way to their village without knowing the exact amount of money, and when he saw it, he was out of breath.
As a sign of appreciation, the man decided to award the couple with an unknown amount of money.
