Arthur moved from Ukraine to America to get a better life, but he realized he could not afford to stay there. It is not really known how, but he became friends with Michael and Stephanye Potts, who got him a fake birth certificate and social security number in order to be able to adopt him.
This would allow him to get a better education and start his life over, and for three years, it worked. Somewhere along the way, however, their relationship deteriorated and the parents themselves tipped off the FBI about the situation. They deny being involved, but the FBI believes otherwise. He was a valedictorian and a huge part of his community, but Samarin is now serving time in prison.
