Interesting Facts About Ancient Egypt

Everyone Had Lice

Lice is still a big problem for people today, so imagine what it was like in ancient times. They didn't have all the products and technology we have today, so ancient Egyptians were completely infested with the pesky parasites.

The problem was so bad that most people just shaved their entire bodies to avoid them and wore wigs. Shaving their heads also helped with the heat, so it was a win-win. However, wigs often got infested too and had to be replaced regularly.

They Invented Toothpaste

The whole thing about lice may have you think that the Egyptians weren't the best at hygiene, but that's not true. They did the best with the resources they had and even invented something we use all the time: toothpaste.

Their version of the product was made of ashes, burnt eggshells, ox hooves, and pumice. They also used toothpicks to remove any food from their teeth. Dental hygiene and looking clean and polished was a huge sign of status.

Everyone Wore Makeup

As it turns out, the Egyptians were more advanced than many countries today when it comes to wearing makeup. While many people still think that makeup is only for women, the Egyptians thought otherwise.

Wearing makeup was a sign of status and a tribute to the gods. Not only that, but many laborers saw makeup and beauty products as a right and would strike when they weren't provided with them.
