Moving Out
It all began in 2013 when this 25-year-old man named Jason finally decided to move out of his parents' house, something he'd been longing to do for quite a while by then.
While he was a bit short on cash, he and his girlfriend really felt like they needed some privacy. Therefore, they moved into a standard 2-room flat that happened to be right across the guy's future in-laws.
One Step At A Time
At first, Jason moved in by himself. He and his girlfriend hadn't been together for a long time, so the bottom line was that they didn't want to move too quickly and then regret it.
It was still a huge step for them, though, as they could now spend more quality time together with no parent watching them over their shoulders. Besides, she would stay the night whenever she felt like it.
Downstairs Neighbors
Everything seemed to be working out just fine, but you know what they say, life isn't a bed of roses! After his first week in his new house, Jason realized that his neighbors were a pain, to say the least.
The couples that lived right next to him were actually OK, but his downstairs neighbors were the ones who gave him a headache. They were just so incredibly loud!
Irresponsible Teenagers
The teenager who lived downstairs would blare music literally all day long, even way past midnight. As if this weren't enough, he would never take out the trash or cut the front lawn when it was their turn to do it.
But to be fair, even though they were somewhat rowdy, he had never bothered Jason directly. Besides, each time Jason would text him to turn the music down, he'd always comply. However, this peaceful coexistence wouldn't last too long.
Things Took A Turn For The Worst
Things definitely took a turn for the worst when when the neighbor's girlfriend moved in. Ever since she came into the picture, everything collapsed into mayhem.
From now on, every time Jason would text his neighbor to turn down the music, they would only turn it up. On top of that, the guy's girlfriend would always bang on the ceiling with her broom.
Tension Arises
As the days went by, Jason figured he just had to live with it and grow used to the music, or else the whole issue would soon turn into a war.
However, things got even more complicated when Jason's fiancé moved in with him. While Jason was a heavy sleeper, his girlfriend was very much the opposite. It would only be a matter of time before tension arose between both girls.
Light Sleeper
Jason's girlfriend was such a light sleeper, that she would always wake up as he tiptoed his way to the bathroom. So you can only imagine how she felt about the neighbors' music at 3 AM!
"Fan on turned at a certain angle in the doorway of the bathroom, door closed half way, blackout curtains with them taped to the wall so zero light comes through, zero sounds other than the fan, you get the idea", Jason said.
Making Compromises
However, tensions soon arose between Jason and his fiancé, too. Day after day, she would ask Jason to go downstairs to tell off the neighbors, whereas Jason suggested taking it down a notch.
The way he saw it, it was logical to ask them to make the music stop if it was already nighttime, but there wasn't much they could do if the neighbors felt like playing music during the day. But would she settle on such terms?
She Would Leave After Breakfast
Jason put his foot down and told his girlfriend he was not willing to pick up a fight with the neighbors over the music they played during the day. But the girl didn't take things too lightly.
The girl wasn't willing to cave in, not even the slightest bit, so she would always spend the day at her parents' house and come back for dinner. Jason started feeling he couldn't put up with it much longer.
#11. Things Were Not Cool
Tired of seeing her girlfriend leave after breakfast every single day, Jason picked up courage and went to confront his neighbor. The first time, the guy was actually quite receptive. When he asked him if they could dial down the noise during the day too, he said "yeah man that's cool".
However, it turns out that the neighbor's girlfriend didn't find Jason's request too amusing, so next time Jason knocked on their door, the man's attitude shifted sharply. This second time, he was more like "you can move out if you don't like it".
Here Comes The Baby
Jason chose to let it go, at least for a few months, but everything changed for good when he and his fiancé tied the knot and decided to start a family of their own.
It was only a matter of time before she got pregnant, and before they knew it, the baby was born. Obviously, this meant that Jason would have to put his foot down and make the music stop for good.
Fight Fire With Fire
After giving it some thought, Jason decided to play it rough. By law, neighbors can only call the police to report loud noises if it's after 11 PM, so the couple decided to use the law in their favor.
They knew they were playing with fire, but they didn't see any other way out. But their neighbors fought fire with fire: they stopped playing their music at late hours in the night, but they would start making noise first thing in the morning. After all, there weren't any rules against that!
Time For Revenge
That's when Jason and his wife chose to start playing dirty. Jason remembered his dad had these giant, black leather bound concert speakers somewhere in his garage. It came with a stereo amplifier, the sort of ones people use at parties.
His dad actually owned two of these, but their apartment was big enough to fit only one. They were so thirsty for revenge, that they had their coffee table thrown out in order to make room for the speaker.
Plan Into Action
Finally, they were all set to put their plan into action. After breakfast, Jason would head off to work while his wife would head to their parents' with the baby, but not before doing the following.
The couple would lay the speaker on the floor facing down against their thin carpet and then they would put on some music and turn on the volume to the very loudest. If their neighbors loved music so much, why would they mind the noise?
Easier Said Than Done
But the plan was easier said than done. Jason would have to empty the shelves and tables, or else the vibrations triggered by the deafening sounds would make everything fall off.
Jason and his wife felt giddy just like a 5-year-old kid with his brand new birthday toy. After work, Jason would stop by his in-laws and stay there for dinner, and only then would the family head back to their place and turn off the music. But did the plan pay off?
So Far, So Good
When they came back home on the first day, they had expected to find the neighbors waiting for them, so they were prepared for war. However, they never even showed up! But the music was so loud that their neighbor two floors below asked them to turn down the volume!
On day two, when the couple went back home after dinner, they found a pile of animal dung on their footstep. Sure, it was gross, but it was the least they expected. Besides, no amount of dung would make them cave in.
From Madonna To The Chicken Dance
Jason would leave the most bizarre playlists: from Madonna to The Beatles, from The Chicken Dance to the Washington Post March. How did the neighbors stand it?
It was on day 3 that Jason received a text from his neighbor reading "Sorry man you can stop now". However, Jason did no such thing. It wouldn't be just that easy.
It Got Out Of Their Hands
Jason hadn't yet quenched his thirst for revenge, and besides, he and his wife were having so much fun. However, things started getting out of their hands, because many of the building's neighbors started filing complaints to the landlord.
Some neighbors even called the police, but since they only left the music playing in daytime hours, that meant that technically they weren't doing anything wrong!
They Learned Their Lesson
By the end of the week, Jason decided to call it quits. It wasn't their neighbors' complaints what they cared about, but they just didn't want to make new enemies in the building. And guess what? It seemed that the couple downstairs had finally learned their lesson!
Ever since that day, they stopped playing music so loud and the couple and their baby were able to enjoy the piece and quiet for the first time since moving in.
Victory, At Last
Every now and then, the couple's neighbors would get on their nerves again, but at least now they knew how to deal with the issue. Each time they heard loud music coming from downstairs, Jason would automatically turn on the speakers.
Jason taught his wife how to handle the speakers and amplifier just in case she needed to tame the beasts while he was at work. However, in the long run, the neighbors learned to keep it down, though it wasn't long before they finally moved out. Victory had come at last!
