A Village Covered By Ice
In 2009, 18 inches below the frozen ice, a team led by Dr. Rick Knecht discovered the remains of the ancient village of Agaligmiut. As the ice began to melt, dozens of objects were uncovered, the problem being that they now face the threat of rapid deterioration.

The team unearthed fine examples of Yup'ik carvings, among many other artifacts, shedding light on the culture of this ancient tribe. All in all, 60,000 items have been recovered, including jewelry and sculptures made out of walrus ivory, making this the most impressive archaeological mission ever carried out in Alaskan territory.
