#30. Julia Roberts & Nick Nolte
It is no secret that co-stars Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte absolutely hated each other when filming I Love Trouble, a feud that is now 30 years in the making. Although they looked like a match made in heaven on screen, the two couldn’t stand to be in the same room together and even filmed several scenes separately.
Neither of them has good things to say about each other. Roberts, on the one hand, has described Nolte as “completely disgusting” and has stated that “he seems to go out of his way to repel people”. Nolte, on his part, has said that Roberts “is not a nice person, everyone knows that”.
#29. Pierce Brosnan & Teri Hatcher
When filming Tomorrow Never Dies, Pierce Brosnan and Teri Hatcher did not get along so well. This resulted in their romantic scenes being extremely hard to pull off and a lot of fighting on set. The problem was apparently Hatcher ‘s tardiness and attitude, caused by her morning sickness as she was pregnant during filming.
Her morning sickness also made the kissing even harder and almost nauseating. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Brosnan admitted that he hated working with Hatcher, but that he doesn’t hold a grudge: “I must admit I let slip a few words which weren’t very nice.“
#28. Richard Gere & Debra Winger
Richard Gere and Debra Winger were an unforgettable couple in An Officer and a Gentleman, but the truth is that they had absolutely no chemistry behind the scenes. The two would stay as far away from each other as possible when the cameras weren’t rolling, and it was allegedly because of Winger ‘s attitude.
In fact, Winger did not get along with many people on set. Not only did she call Gere “a brick wall“ when it came to their kiss scenes, but she also called the director of the movie, Taylor Hackford, “an animal”. Gere and Winger reunited a few years ago, however, and buried the hatchet.
#27. Sharon Stone & William Baldwin
It is no secret that Sharon Stone and William Baldwin hated each other ‘s guts during the filming of their movie, Silver. Allegedly, their feud started from the very first day they met, and they never managed to work it out. Although they seemed like a super-hot couple on screen, that wasn’t easy to achieve.
In fact, Stone bit Baldwin ‘s tongue during a kiss scene on purpose, which caused them to shoot the rest of their romantic scenes separately for the sake of the movie. As director Phil Noyce stated: “I ended up having to shoot many of their close-ups with only one of them in the room at a time, because they didn’t want to look at each other.”
#26. Reese Witherspoon & Vince Vaughn
Although Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn played a married couple in Four Christmases, being married in real life would have been their worst nightmare. The two did not get along at all on set, and their feud only escalated as time went by. Apparently, Vaughn’ s spontaneous personality did not match Reese’ s more structured approach to filming.
Their animosity got so bad that the sex scene they were supposed to have in the movie was cut out because Witherspoon could not go through with it. According to Vaughn, it wasn’t a big deal, and Witherspoon just blew it out of proportion. Either way, it was probably for the best.
#25. Brad Pitt & Cate Blanchett
Brad Pittand Cate Blanchett are not only two of the most famous actors out there, but they are also considered some of the most attractive people in Hollywood. Therefore, you would think that their chemistry would be on point, right? Well, no, not really. In fact, their on-screen kisses were extremely awkward.
While working on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button together, Brad’ s wife, Angelina Jolie, was allegedly not so happy about the two of them kissing, so she specifically requested that the kiss would be taken off the script. She was, of course, unsuccessful in her request, and the kiss scene was very awkward as a result.
#24. Tom Cruise & Thandie Newton
Tom Cruise is one of the most experienced actors in the game and has filmed countless romantic scenes in all of his movies. After all that work, you would think that the Hollywood bachelor would be good at what he does, but for his Mission Impossible co-star, Thandie Newton, kissing him was quite the impossible mission.
Thousands of women would line up just to get a glimpse of the Cruise-man even for a second, but Newton couldn’t wait to get away from her co-star after they had to film their kiss scene. According to her, his kisses were extremely slobbery and unbearable. So much so, that the editing crew had to work its magic to make it seem like a good kiss in the final cut. Yikes!
#23. Marilyn Monroe & Tony Curtis
Marilyn Monroe was, without a doubt, the most desirable woman in the 20th century. Often described as the most beautiful woman in the world and the first true sex symbol, you would think that her co-star Tony Curtis would have been more than happy to kiss her, but that wasn’t the case.
Curtis didn’t have a good time when filming Some Like It Hot for many reasons. First, he had to dress in feminine clothes and speak in a very high voice that would hurt his vocal cords, but the thing that bothered him the most was kissing Monroe, stating that it was “very unpleasant“.
#22. Harrison Ford & Carrie Fisher
After starring in the first Star Wars movie, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher became superstars, and fans really wanted their characters, Han Solo and Princess Leia, to get together. This was probably due to the incredible chemistry between the two, who happened to be dating behind the scenes.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work out between the young actors, and when the time came to film the second installment of the saga, the two were in awkward terms. In this movie, their characters did get together, and it was beyond uncomfortable for the exes. Still, they remained professional and amicable.
#21. Angelina Jolie & James McAvoy
As we learned before thanks to this list, Angelina Jolie was very protective of her relationship with Brad Pitt and didn’t want to see him kiss his co-stars. However, when it was her turn to have an on-screen kiss, her marriage was starting to fall apart, so she decided to go through with it.
James McAvoy, who kissed Angelina on Wanted, said that, although Angelina was ok with the kiss, she didn’t put much energy into it, and he had to do all the work. Not only that, but also the set was so hot and they were both so sweaty that the kiss was just plain gross. Who would’ve thought that kissing Angelina Jolie would ever be gross?
#20. Leonardo DiCaprio & Virginie Ledoyen
Imagine you get to kiss the one and only Leonardo DiCaprio on a beautiful beach in Thailand under the warmth of the sun and hearing the soft waves hit the shore in the background. It sounds like the best possible thing that could happen to you, right? Well, not for Virgine Ledoyen.
The two had to film many steamy scenes for their film The Beach, but unfortunately, they got off to a rocky start. When filming their very first kiss scene in the water, the pair almost drowned and had to be rescued. After that, the pair was very uncomfortable and scared of being anywhere near the water.
#19. Will Smith & Eva Mendes
Even though the movie Hitch is about a relationship expert helping people out with their love problems, Will Smith was in desperate need of help when it came to kissing his co-star, Eva Mendes. Their love scenes were beyond uncomfortable because of a very particular habit of Eva’s.
Allegedly, Mendes was starstruck and very nervous to film love scenes with Smith, and her nerves made her hungry. So, before every scene, she would eat her favorite snack: a tuna sandwich. As a result, her kisses were very stinky, and Smith nicknamed her go-to snack as “the stank breath special”.
#18. Kirsten Dunst & Tobey Maguire
One of the most iconic kisses in cinematic history is definitely the kiss between Peter Parker and his long-time crush, Mary Jane, in Spiderman. Who wouldn’t want to have an intense, romantic, upside-down kiss in the pouring rain? Not Tobey Maguire, for sure.
Although it looked super romantic on camera, Maguire was hanging upside down, which is uncomfortable as it is. Not only that, the fake rain kept getting inside his nose and mouth, which made him feel like he was drowning. The kiss literally took his breath away, in the worst way possible.
#17. Jennifer Grey & Patrick Swayze
Jennifer Greyand Patrick Swayze had undeniable chemistry on camera and became one of the most iconic ‘ 80s couples. However, there was zero chemistry behind the scenes, and the actors really, really disliked each other. So you can imagine that the love scenes they had to film were particularly awful for them.
The two constantly butted heads and couldn’t agree on anything when filming Dirty Dancing, which caused a lot of tension on set. When the camera started rolling, however, the two actors were extremely professional and ended up making a legendary movie —while hating every second of it.
#16. Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdams
One of the most shocking couples to make it to this list are Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. The two starred in the epically gut-wrenching love story that was The Notebook, and ironically, they hated each other’ s guts during filming. Their fighting on set became so bad that Gosling even tried to get McAdams fired.
Although they had all the chemistry in the world on camera, the two couldn’t stand each other. Eventually, the two worked things out, and filming became bearable. However, they shocked everyone when they started dating in real life after the movie was released. Perhaps they had been repressing the strong feelings they truly had for each other?
#15. Robert Pattinson & Reese Witherspoon
Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon displayed tons of chemistry during their movie, Water for Elephants, where they both played circus workers who fall in love. Both being experienced actors, you would think that the kiss scenes would be a piece of cake, but in fact, they were the hardest to film.
The reason for this was a virus that was running rampant onset. Many people caught it and got very sick, including Pattinson. Although he was pale and sweaty and had extremely chapped lips, he still made out with Witherspoon, and their kisses were just plain disgusting.
#14. Johnny Depp & Carey Mulligan
Johnny Depp starred in Public Enemies alongside Carey Mulligan, and you might have noticed that there are no kiss scenes in the movie. So, why are they on this list? Because their kiss scenes were so horrible that they had to be cut out of the movie.
Depp has said many times that he hates doing kiss scenes, even though he’s a very versatile actor and is pretty much ok with doing anything else onscreen. That issue, coupled with the fact that Mulligan was extremely nervous about kissing such a big superstar resulted in such an awkward kiss that it had to be re-shot sixteen times and was eventually deleted off the movie altogether.
#13. Alyson Hannigan & Jason Segel
Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel played the cutest couple ever on How I Met Your Mother. I mean, who didn’t love Lily and Marshall together? Well, not the actors themselves, for sure. Actually, it was Hannigan who had a problem with the whole thing, because of Segel's bad smoking habit.
Although they got along very well and became good friends over the years, Hannigan just couldn’t stand Segel's smokey breath. After some time, they reached an agreement: Segel would pay her every time he smoked on set. The truth is that she ended up making a pretty penny after ten seasons.
#12. Megan Fox & Amanda Seyfried
Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried’s hot, steamy kiss in Jennifer’s Body is what drew many people to watch the movie in theaters, but in reality, the actresses hated kissing each other. Both of them were terrified before filming, especially Amanda, and this resulted in a non-believable scene.
It was obvious that neither of them wanted to be there and they just wanted to get it over with. According to Fox, they both had chin acne and were stressed out about being filmed so close. In the end, editors got rid of their acne with special effects, so one could say the actresses made it a bigger deal than it had to be.
#11. Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper
Even though Silver Linings Playbook got several Academy Award nominations and even got Jennifer Lawrence her first Oscar, it was very hard for her and Bradley Cooper to be a couple on screen. Despite their real-life friendship, the two had a hard time getting that romantic chemistry going in front of the camera.
Their kiss scenes were particularly difficult for them, so they decided to talk it out. Lawrence thought that opening up and being honest with Cooper would be a good thing, but it had the opposite effect. Apparently, when she told him that his kisses were “sloppy”, things only got more awkward.
#10. Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Pratt
Jennifer Lawrence is on our list again, and this time because of her on-screen kisses with Chris Pratt in Passengers. The truth is that kiss scenes aren’t Lawrence’s strong suit, and even other actors have claimed that kissing her wasn’t very pleasant — such as Liam Hemsworth in The Hunger Games.
The explanation for her awkward kisses with Pratt is that, allegedly, she felt extremely uncomfortable kissing her friend’s husband. At the time, Pratt was married to actress Anna Faris, a good friend of Jennifer, and this created a very uncomfortable environment on set.
#9. Emma Watson & Rupert Grint
All Harry Potter fans will agree that the most awaited kiss in the whole franchise was definitely the one between Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The two characters had undeniable chemistry in all the movies, and they finally got together in the eighth installment of the saga.
Unfortunately, Emma Watsonand Rupert Grint did not share the same sentiment as the fans. The two met when they were 11 and 13 years old respectively, and developed a brother-and-sister relationship over the years. Then, when it was time to kiss, it was beyond awkward and icky for the pair.
#8. Jennifer Lawrence & Liam Hemsworth
Our favorite repeat offender is back! As we anticipated before, Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth certainly did not have a good time during their kiss scenes in The Hunger Games, and according to Liam, Jennifer is to blame.
Hemsworth said in an interview that kissing Lawrence was just gross because of her bad breath. He said that she would have the smelliest foods before filming, like tuna or eggs (Eva Mendes we're talking to you!) and wouldn’t even brush her teeth before shooting. Still, he remained professional and the scenes turned out great.
#7. Harrison Ford & Sean Young
Harrison Ford and Sean Young helped make one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises of all time: Blade Runner. However, the two had an awful time with each other on set for a variety of different reasons. The pair would constantly fight and disagree on virtually everything, to the point where the crew dubbed their love scene “the hate scene“.
According to Ford, Young was unbearable, and according to Young, Ford was insufferable. When asked about their infamous animosity, Young said:“When you’re twenty and you’re insecure, you hope that your leading man will be like, ‘It’s ok, you’ll be fine’... and Harrison wasn’t particularly generous that way.”
#6. Janet Jackson & Tupac Shakur
During his lifetime, Tupac Shakur was a real heartthrob and broke many hearts through his career. Not only that, but he had a reputation for being a womanizer, along with being involved with gangs and doing drugs. This bad-boy image was incompatible with Janet Jackson‘s girl-next-door reputation, which she tried very hard to maintain.
When the two paired up for Poetic Justice, Jackson did everything in her power to limit her interactions with Shakur and even tried to avoid kissing him altogether. She felt like her reputation could be damaged by being associated with Shakur, who also felt offended by this. As a result, their love scenes were super awkward.
#5. Shailene Woodley & Miles Teller
Both Shailene Woodleyand Miles Teller had their breakout role in The Spectacular Now, which was critically acclaimed. Their chemistry was palpable on screen, so it came as a surprise when reports surfaced saying that the two actors did not enjoy working together.
According to Teller, Woodley had terrible breath caused by the Chinese herbs she took during filming, and according to her, Miles was the one with the awful breath. We are not sure what to believe, but what we do believe is that these two should not work together again.
#4. Helena Bonham Carter & Woody Allen
The infamous actor and director Woody Allen apparently made it very hard for Helena Bonham Carter to enjoy their scenes together when filming Mighty Aphrodite. Allegedly, Allen is very meticulous and controlling when it comes to his films, and he has a policy for every single detail that goes into the film.
According to Helena, Woody had a “no-exchange-of-liquid“ policy when it came to kissing scenes. This meant that they had to stop and re-shoot several times until he was satisfied with the kiss, which had to be extremely dry. Carter described the experience as “like kissing the Berlin Wall”.
#3. Taylor Lautner & Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart was lucky enough to film the Twilight movies alongside her real-life boyfriend at the time, Robert Pattinson. The problem was that the movies also involved a love triangle, in which Kristen also had to kiss Taylor Lautner, which wasn’t enjoyable for either party.
In fact, the two became great friends thanks to the movies, but the kissing scenes were just awkward. Perhaps, because Pattinson was there on set too, or maybe because their friendship made the whole thing awkward. Either way, the two are very glad they don’t have to do it ever again.
#2. Leonardo DiCaprio & Claire Danes
Who would’ve thought that the one and only Leonardo DiCaprio would show up on this list twice? To be fair, the problem wasn’t his kissing skills. In reality, his co-star in Romeo and Juliet, Claire Danes, just really disliked Leonardo as a person and had barely anything good to say about him.
The truth is that the two didn’t get along because, according to Danes, DiCaprio was very immature. He allegedly kept playing pranks on the cast and crew, which Danes didn’t find funny in the slightest. On the other hand, DiCaprio felt Danes was annoyingly uptight and needed to lighten up.
#1. Jake Gyllenhaal & Heath Ledger
We all know that Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger starred in the iconic Brokeback Mountain, where the two main characters struggle to come to terms with their sexuality and their love for each other. It was already difficult for the actors to pretend to have any chemistry with each other, but that wasn’t the only issue.
Ledger’s real-life girlfriend, Michelle Williams, was also in the movie and was there when he and Gyllenhaal filmed all those steamy scenes. This allegedly made Heath very uncomfortable, but he managed to keep it together. The film turned out great and the two don’t look awkward at all on screen.
