Did You Know These 20 Movie Sequels Are Being Made?

You probably noticed that Hollywood is a money-generating machine. But why? Well, Hollywood has consolidated a narrative structure and a staging style of its own as well as a powerful advertising machinery. Because of all these factors, Hollywood is the largest and most profitable film industry in the globe and it produces hundreds of successful movies each year. Obviously, many of Hollywood’s most successful films have their own sequels, and you should know that many are gonna be released during the next year! So here’s a list of 20 great Hollywood sequels that you didn’t know were being made, all of which will be released between this year and 2020!

#20. The Accountant 2

The 2016 crime-drama film The Accountant didn’t receive the best of critics and it scored only 52% on the film blog Rotten Tomatoes. In spite of this, it was one of the most successful productions of the year, mirrored in the fact that it earned over $150 million.

Therefore, fans went crazy when they announced just a couple of months ago that a sequel would be made. And FYI, the cast will be the same, so you’ll get to see Ben Affleck playing the role of a math savant once more!

#19. Coming To America 2

There is no doubt that Coming to America is of the best movies of all time, and to the surprise of many fans, it was recently announced that a sequel will hit the big screen next year. Its protagonist, Eddie Murphy, tweeted about it and minutes later deleted the tweet. Why did he delete it, one may wonder?

Photo: Courtesy of Idolator

According to the scriptwriters, Coming To America 2 will tell a new story of Prince Akeem, who discovers he has a son and returns to the United States to meet the little heir to the throne. I just can’t wait, any movie with Murphie in it is guaranteed laughter!

#18. Gladiator 2

Gladiator is one of the most successful films in history, proved by the fact that it won a whopping 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. But was Gladiator 2 really necessary? I have my doubts, but that doesn’t mean I’m dying to watch it!

The first installment ends with the death of lead character Maximus after a duel against Commodus, so one would think that Russel Crowe won’t be appearing in the sequel. But what story will they come up with? Even though director Ridley Scott hasn’t revealed much information, he has confessed that the story will focus on Lucius, Lucilla’s son.

#17. Men In Black International

You didn’t expect Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones to star in a fourth movie of the Men in Black franchise, did you? However, this new installment does include new characters and new actors: we have Tessa Thompson as Molly, a test agent who is sent to London for training, and Chris Hemsworth as Agent H.

Men in Black: International is, of course, connected to the original trilogy, and of course, alien threats are once again the core of the plot. But what’s new then? Well, this time, the aliens threaten the whole world and not just New York City, and the agents realize that there is a mole within the Men in Black organization. Will they save the world? Watch it and find out!

#16. Bright 2

Bright had a production of nearly $100 million, but surprisingly it was never premiered in cinemas. However, when it arrived on Netflix in 2017, it quickly became one of the most striking action films on the platform. The film’s success was greatly due to its originality, as it is a police drama set in a magical world where humans live with orcs, fairies or magic wands.

No one believed that it would attract more than 11 million viewers almost instantly! And despite the cruel criticism that the film received, Netflix has decided to make a sequel, once again with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton as the lead characters and David Ayer as the director. However, screenwriter Max Landis will be replaced by the writer of Beauty and the Beast.

#15. Edge of Tomorrow 2

Remember the 2014 sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow? This thrilling film follows the steps of a soldier with no experience who dies during combat. However, the day restarts every time he dies, and he is caught in an endless loop as he relives the same day and dies in the same war over and over again.

The film is exciting but deeply unsettling, and that’s probably the reason why it was such a success! It earned over $370 million worldwide, and guess what? They’ve announced the release of a second part too! Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise will once again give life to Rita Vrataski and Bill Cage. We can’t wait!

#14. The Rocketeers

Hey, millennials! Do you remember The Rocketeer? As of today, it is one of the best-posed adaptations of a comic that has ever been made. Directed by Joe Johnston, it is based on the fictional character created by illustrator Dave Stevens. The film was a whopping success in the time of its release back in 1991, and it happens to be that Disney is planning to restart the cult franchise two decades later.

The lead character is a circus pilot who has a rocket tied to his back which allows him to fly. And guess what? While many actors were considered for the role – such as Johnny Depp, Kevin Costner, and Bill Paxton – they ended up going for Billy Campbell, the same who starred in the first installment.

#13. 47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter

Yes, incredible as it may seem, shark movies are still just as popular as in the old days, although arguably no other movie will reach the success of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. However, when the horror shark film 47 Meters Down was released in 2017, fans went crazy, and the numbers speak for themselves! Starred by Mandy Moore, the movie had a $5-million budget but raised over $45 million worldwide.

Also directed by Johannes Roberts, its sequel was released this year and follows the story of four teenagers snorkeling in a ruined underwater city. They quickly find themselves in an aquatic hell as their adventure turns into horror when they discover they are not alone in the submerged caverns. What they find is pretty obvious, right?

#12. Bill And Ted Face The Music

There is no doubt that 2019 is, so far, one of the best years in Keanu Reeves’ career. The guy became a viral sensation all around the planet and now everyone talks about him. So much so, that in August of this year, the Instagram account KeanuReeeves.FanPage published a series of photographs from the set of his next film, Bill & Ted Face the Music, and hundreds of thousands of users shared it!

This film represents the closing of a trilogy that began in 1989. We really hope that this comedy film comes with alternative endings and time travel stories just like the previous ones! As far as we know, scriptwriters Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson have promised fans “will keep the tone, the sweetness, and the absurd” of the first two.

#11. Top Gun: Maverick

This is a harmful announcement for the anxious … Get ready to feel once again the adrenaline of one of the most iconic movies of the 80s! After years of rumors, it is already a confirmed fact that the sequel to Top Gun will officially hit theaters in summer 2020.

Photo: Courtesy of Idolator

The original star, Tom Cruise, returns for this second installment although with a not so youthful appearance. This time, he’ll play the role of an instructor at Top Gun Academy in San Diego, California. The film will also welcome new cast members like Jon Hamm and Miles Teller. Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed Cruise in Oblivion, will be the new director. We really have our hopes up!

#10. We’re Wolves

New Zealand gave the world two of the great comic talents of the 21st century: TaikaWaititi and Jemaine Clement. Waititi gained worldwide fame thanks to Thor: Ragnarok while Clement rose to stardom after landing a role in the comedy show The Conchords. But did you know they acted together in the comedy-horror film What We Do in the Shadows?

Photo: Courtesy of Idolator

Well, if you’re a fan of bizarre horror films like this one, I’ve got some great news for you, cause a sequel is being made! The second installment, We’re Wolves, will be just like the previous one: a fake documentary that follows the lives of four centenary vampires and the power struggles between them.

#9. McClane

Yes, this title makes reference to the popular action hero played by Bruce Willis in the 1988 film Die Hard. And in 2013, Universal Pictures presented what was the last installment of the saga, A Good Day To Die Hard. Since then, the company had not ruled on a new movie… Until now!

Photo: Courtesy of Idolator

Spoiler alert! This prequel will focus on the origins of John McClain. Director Len Wiseman says that while the McClane from Die Hard fought terrorists, his 1970 version will patrol the streets of New York. Obviously, a new actor will play the role of this famous police officer, since no way can Willis pass for a 20-year-old now!

#8. Beetlejuice 2

At this point in the list, it is clear that it is never too late to make the second part of a classic movie. Fans have always speculated on the possibility of a second Beetlejuice film, and the truth is that Tim Burton has been trying to carry out this project for several years. After all, this film consolidated him as one of the most prominent filmmakers in Hollywood, so how could it go wrong?

Photo: Courtesy of Metro 95.2

The last thing we knew is that Warner hired a different screenwriter to develop the story, but it seems that the studio has lost interest in the film and set it aside for now. However, both Tim Burton and Michael Keaton seem interested in making the sequel. No one has yet consulted Winona Ryder, Geena Davis, or Alec Baldwin, but it is rumored that they’re all up for it. We hope that this project resurfaces, and soon!

#7. Master And Commander 2

Based on the work of Patrick O’Brian, Master And Commander was directed by Peter Weir and starred Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. It was a spectacular adventure drama that cost $ 150 million but could only raise half of its budget in the United States and $212 worldwide. Considering those rough numbers, it came as a surprise when they announced the sequel!

Photo: Courtesy of Idolator

14 years have passed since the first installment, so fans are tired of all the waiting. However, the exact date of the release hasn’t been confirmed yet. Russell Crowe sent a cryptic tweet in 2017 fueling the hopes of fans who still yearn to see a continuation of the story, but it appears to be that the producers are still looking for financial support. Let’s keep our hopes up!

#6. Den Of Thieves 2

Although the box office didn’t necessarily scream sequel, the crime thriller led by Gerard Butler earned $80 million worldwide. However, Hollywood decided to prepare for another action-packed police mission, and they’re hoping to keep the budget low just like in the first installment.

Photo: Courtesy of Idolator

In Den Of Thieves 2, Butler’s Big Nick will come back and will try to track down Donnie, while joining the infamous Phanter mafia to steal the world’s most expensive diamonds. And don’t you worry, cause 50 Cent and O’Shea Jackson Jr will be back too! Oh, and Christian Gudegast will be the screenwriter and director once again as well.

#5. The Passion Of The Christ 2 – The Resurrection

The Passion of the Christ  was released in 2004 and was one of that year’s most controversial films. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards in 2005 and managed to raise a modest sum of $611 million worldwide. That being said, a sequel does not make much sense considering that nothing very exciting happens before Jesus resurrected.

Photo: Courtesy of Idolator

However, director Mel Gibson confirmed that a second part is being made and that the plot will revolve around the three days during which Jesus fights for the underworld until he returns home. He also said that the film will not only center on the Resurrection of Christ but also on other lesser-known aspects of Jesus’ life.

#4. Doctor Sleep

Almost 40 years have passed since the release of The Shining, and guess what? Last year, producers announced the release of a sequel, which was premiered just a few months ago! Directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Ewan McGregor, Doctor Sleep tells the story of a now-adult Dan Torrance, who meets a young girl with similar powers and tries to protect her from a threatening cult.

Photo: Courtesy of Idolator

There is no doubt that Flanagan’s challenge is twofold since not only does it have to live up with Stephen King’s 2013 novel, but also with the film’s first installment directed by Kubrick. If you can’t wait for its premiere, I recommend you read the book, which became a best-seller as soon as it got published and even won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel of the Year.

#3. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard

Starred by Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Selma Hayek, The Hitman’s Bodyguard was one of 2017’s greatest action films and fans loved it. And guess what? Next year, the sequel will be released! The cast will be the same, but Morgan Freeman will join too!

Photo: Courtesy of Idolator

The sequel will center around Hayek’s character, who will be released after being imprisoned in the first installment, and she will join his husband on a mission to the Amalfi Coast. This will lead them to ask for Reynolds’ help once again. We can’t wait!

#2. Chicken Run 2

After almost 20 years, Chicken Run, one of the most iconic stop-motion films of all time, will have a sequel. The announcement was revealed by Will Becher, co-director of Aardman Animation, during a promotional event for Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the British studio is developing a second film and that it will be co-financed by StudioCanal, Pathe, and DreamWorks Animation. The same media also affirmed that Sam Fell, famous for ParaNorman, will direct the sequel, while Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell will return as screenwriters.

#1. Bad Boys For Life

Let me tell you that in my opinion, Bad Boys and 21 Jump Street compete for the best police action-comedy film ever made. But that’s not what our list is about, that’s why I’ll focus on what will be the third installment of the franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, who will reprise their roles as detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett.

Photo: Courtesy of Idolator

The truth is that the threequel has been brewing since 2009 when Sony hired Peter Craig to write the script. In 2015, Joe Carnahan was selected to direct the film, but two years later he quit due to programming conflicts. A year later, the cameras began shooting with Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and BilallFallah. According to Geek Worldwide, the scheduled release date will be January 17, 2020. We can’t wait to see those rebel cops in action!
