Ali Barbour's Cave Restaurant, Diani Beach, Kenya
George Jackie Barbour decided some 30 years ago to convert the cave into this unique restaurant. Every spot of the cave remains exactly as discovered, with the exception of the chamber housing the kitchen and lavatories. In the restaurant, only the stone floor has been added together with furniture and fittings, lighting and sound effects. The natural holes in the roof crust are open to the sky, protected in bad weather with sliding covers.
Ali Barbour’s Cave is thought to be between 120,000 and 180,000 years old. Situated about 30km south of Mombasa and 200m back from the high water mark, it comprises a series of interlinking chambers at depths of up to 10m below ground level. The natural holes in the cave ceiling are open to the sky, and seating is under the stars creating an intimate and elegant atmosphere. The cuisine is typically international, specializing in seafood.
Canlis, Seattle, Washington
Richie-riches, businesspeople, and gourmands love this mid-century marvel of a restaurant with its amazing view of Lake Union. Chef Brady Williams balances classic Canlis dishes with his own vision and plenty of the Pacific Northwest’s best ingredients. It is one of the most award-winning restaurants in the greater Northwest; Gourmet Magazine ranked it as one of the top 20 restaurants in the United States, and it has also been hailed by The New York Times as “Seattle’s fanciest, finest restaurant for over 60 years”. Since 1997, Canlis has been a recipient of the _Wine Spectator_ Grand Award.
A restaurant with a rich tradition, Canlis was opened in the 1950s and since then has served as one of the best places in Seattle. Few things to note: there is a dress code requiring men to wear suits or sport coats. Casual wear is not allowed. And while children are allowed, electronic devices are not. The dinner lasts roughly three hours, so parents are warned that if their children cannot stay calm for that long, Canlis might not be the place for them.
El Farallon, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Tucked into the cliffs of The Resort at Pedregal, El Farallon is the best restaurant in Cabo San Lucas. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, listen to the waves crash below while making your selection from the ocean-to-table menu featuring the daily bounty from local fishers. Executive Chef Gustavo Pinet offers only the best selection of the local catch on shaved ice. Our culinary experts will guide your selection with an old-fashioned scale that weighs each choice and assist with side dish pairings.
El Farallón is considered one of the most romantic restaurants in the city thanks to the candle lights. Nonetheless, eating in this restaurant is best during sunset. The view goes into the second plane because it is actually outdone by the service and the food. Our recommendation: try some of the fishes, as seafood is the specialty of the house.
La View, Ubud, Bali
La View Restaurant is a charming split-level setting with an outdoor terrace for intimate wining and dining with a menu of gourmet cuisine that transcends South East Asia with a distinct French infusion. Alternatively, the guests can enjoy the pool bar with its breathtaking vistas that sweep over the valley, and which also serves more traditional Indonesian culinary delights throughout the day. A comprehensive in-room dining menu is also available.
Overlooking the magnificent Ayung Valley and surrounded by luxuriant tropical vegetation, the hotel restaurant, aptly named ‘ La View,’ serves fusion cuisine in an exceptional setting, combining traditional Indonesian gastronomy with influences from various South-East Asian cooking styles as well as some French references. The dishes hold the promise of an amazing gastronomic journey based on a perfect marriage of flavors and seasonings, such as urab (a traditional specialty of chopped vegetables, spices and coconut), which may be accompanied by meats prepared in a Western European style.
Monal, Pakistan
Sitting on top of the Potohar, nestled against the pristine Margallas, and looking over the plains of Peshawar and Lahore, the brick and mortar of Islamabad may be modern. Still, its culture and traditions are embedded in the centuries of history that have unfolded between the ranges of Khyber and Bolan and the valley of Mehran. And in many ways, The Monal – named after a pheasant of rare and exquisite beauty dwelling a little further north – epitomes this amalgam of the modern and the ancient.
The resort is a touch of modernity set in a pastoral idyll. Situated at the height of about 1173 meters above sea level, it is equipped with the latest facilities but offers an ambiance cultivated by heritage. The road to The Monal undulates along the thick verdure of the Margallas as if etched in emeralds. The Faisal Mosque and the white rise of the Constitutional Avenue melt away picturesquely into the bucolic horizons of the Punjab and the Frontier.
Rossellini's, Ravello, Italy
While a lot of 5-star Italian hotels offer a Michelin-star restaurant, few can boast of the lavishness and location on Palazzo Avino’s Rossellini’s Restaurant. Under the helm of one of the area’s top Italian chefs, this dinner-only hotspot is arranged within an aristocratic dining room of tumbled stone floors with 12-foot ceilings and a vintage wine cellar. An intricate menu of squid-stuffed ravioli, rose-wrapped lamb and olive-crusted cod is presented in an elongated tasting sequence that’s a destination in its own right.
The chef dazzles with a tasting menu of ingenious and hard to identify dishes like buffalo mozzarella served raw, in liquid form and iced. The pasta course is a squid and crab-filled ravioli that are almost too delicate to eat with its homemade pasta topped with creamed potato and ricotta sauce. Fish and meat courses are a cod fillet with olive puree or rose-wrapped lamb with white asparagus drizzled in sun-dried tomato sauce. Meals are followed by a light cheese selection and mini-desert that satiates without overstuffing.
