How Did This Boy Become A Serial Killer?

Early Life

Andrew Phillip Cunanan was born on August 31, 1969, in National City, California, the youngest of 5 children.

He showed great potential at a very young age, and his parents didn't fail to notice. But he also showed some concerning signs as well...

Liar, Liar...

As Andrew grew up, he developed a reputation as a prolific liar, telling tall tales about his family.

He told his classmates that he was a wealthy prince from the Philippines, along with many other lies. But why did he feel like he needed to lie?

Trying To Fit In

Because of his intellect, his parents sent him to a very prestigious school, where most kids were rich.

Andrew had very low self-esteem, which led him to lie compulsively. After finishing high school, he had an internal crisis, which was only the beginning of his downfall...

Expensive Taste

Andrew was desperate to maintain the social status he pretended to have during school. This led him to seek wealthy older men who could be easily manipulated. He lied his way into their hearts and their wallets and enjoyed an expensive lifestyle for several years.

But his luck was about to run out... One particular relationship changed his life forever. Click on the next slide to see what it was.

The Beginning Of The End

One of the many men he dated was Norman Blachford, who would give him whatever he wanted, along with $200,000 a month. When Blachford broke up with him, Andrew had no money, so he started selling drugs and became very depressed.

That's when he decided to find his first victim: a former friend named Jeff. People were shocked to find out what happened to Andrew's friend. Slide to read all about it.

Old Wounds

Several years before, Andrew lived in Minneapolis and was in a relationship with a man named David Madson. He and David had a mutual friend named Jeff Trail, with whom Andrew became very close.

Eventually, however, both David and Jeff distanced themselves from Andrew, which opened a wound that never truly healed...

The Trip That Changed His Life Forever

After going through a crisis, something inside him made him buy a one-way ticket to Minneapolis to visit his old friend Jeff, and his ex-boyfriend David.

Andrew stayed at an apartment owned by David and reconnected with his old friends. But one night, Andrew and Jeff had a huge falling out; so bad, that Jeff told his roommate that he feared for his life...

First Kill

After an argument, Andrew beat Jeff to death with a claw hammer and left his body rolled in a rug in David's apartment.

Sometime later, David walked in and found Jeff's body, but that's not all he found...

The Second Victim

When David walked in, he not only found Jeff's body, but also Andrew, who was waiting for him.

Andrew held David hostage for a couple of days, after which he forced him to help him hide Jeff's body. After disposing of Jeff, Andrew shot David three times.

The Third Victim

Andrew quickly escaped to Chicago, where he murdered Lee Miglin, a wealthy real-estate owner.

Although their connection was never discovered, it is very likely that Miglin was another ex-lover. But this was just the beginning of Andrew's killing spree...

The Fourth Victim

At this point, the police figured out that Andrew was behind these murders, and the whole country was waiting for him to be caught.

Although all policemen were after him, Andrew managed to get to New Jersey and murdered William Reese, a 45-year-old caretaker. Up next, Cunanan's most famous victim.

Gianni Versace

Gianni Versace, the founder of the international fashion house Versace, was at the peak of his career. He was incredibly wealthy and was friends with prominent figures such as Madonna, Elton John and Princess Diana.

Unfortunately, his life came into an end when he crossed paths with Andrew. How did he enter his life? Find out on the next page.

Fateful Encounter

It is believed that Andrew met Gianni in 1990, who happened to be in town. Gianni fit Andrew's type perfectly: an older, very wealthy man.

It was never confirmed whether something happened between them at that time, but Andrew clearly considered him one of his targets.

Murder At The Versace Mansion

On July 15, 1997, Andrew found Gianni Versace as he was returning to his home from a morning walk. Andrew shot Gianni twice on the front stairway of his Miami mansion.

Although there were witnesses, nobody was able to catch him, and he escaped. But was the police able to catch Andrew eventually? Find out next.

The End

Andrew escaped the scene and hid in a houseboat for 8 days. Law enforcement was hot on his tail, and Andrew felt more and more concerned.

On that July 23rd, Andrew took his own life with the same gun he had used to murder his victims. And with him, died the answer to the most pressing question: why?
