The city decided to collect and keep the alligators in shelters with the hope that zoos, other shelters as well as people would want to offer them a forever home. Some alligators were lucky but nobody wanted Wally… He was devastated and hopeless…

Wally had just celebrated his first birthday when a friend of his rescuer, Henney, noticed Wally and started to ask for more information about him. Henney’s friend was surprised that someone noticed Wally and was relieved because Wally was scheduled to be euthanized in the following month if he wasn’t able to find a forever home.

“If I wouldn’t have taken him he would have been killed,” Joie Henney, said.

Obviously Wally’s life was saved. He had just been saved from the most frightening thing and he had been adopted and offered a forever home. But Wally was about to say his very own “thank you” in a very special way. This is not something that you’d expect.

Henney, the man who adopted Wally was battling some serious mental issues at the time. Henney was diagnosed with severe depression and his doctor suggested that it was time to start taking medication. Times were tough for Henney as he disliked the idea of starting the pills… Then something amazing happened.

Henney started to realize that he felt much, much better when he spending time with Wally. He would spend hours playing, petting and strolling with him and amazingly his mental health was taking a 180 degrees turn.

It appeared that Wally was becoming Henney’s best friend and the more time they were spending together, the better was Henny feeling. Henney’s doctor knew about his patient’s special friend and figured out that if this worked, Henney might had a chance to avoid medication.

“When I came home and was around him, it was all OK,” Henney said. “My doctor knew about Wally and figured it works, so why not?”

Something amazing could be told about Wally! He was in the right path to rescue his rescuer. Wally seemed to realize when Henney was feeling bad and was doing everything to cheer him up. He was climbing on Henney when he was noticing that something was wrong. Then this happened.

Mental health scars usually take a long time to heal and Wally had made its life goal to help Henney recover. After 3 years of serious emotional support Henney’s doctor realized that Henney was a different man. He was almost out of depression! Of course that wasn’t a problem for Wally and Henney couldn’t care less. Wally was over 5 feet long and he still managed to climb on Henney and cuddle with him.

Even though Wally was helping Henney years before being registered as an emotional support animal, Henny was cautious when taking Wally outside of his home because… he was an alligator. People tended to sometimes discriminate against Wally and were afraid of him even though Henney was reassuring them that Wally meant no harm.

Henney was bringing Wally with him only to places where he knew for sure that Wally would be welcomed. He even took his best friend with him when he paid a visit to the local nursing home. Wally of course, cheered everyone up!

Henney decided to adopt two more alligators, Scrappy who is 2-years-old and Luna who is just eight-months-old! Wally was more than excited and Henney couldn’t be feel more blessed.

“Scrappy is still kinda small and Luna still likes to run around,” Henney said. “It’s Wally who gives the hugs.”
