20. WALLY THE ALLIGATOR
philly.comMeet Wally! Wally was an alligator living around Orlando, Florida. He was a part of the local population of alligators that was in risk of being eliminated by people because Orlando was attracting more and more child tourists. Alligators are considered dangerous to co-exist with people and especially with young children so, some really frightening things were proposed… Click next see for yourself!
19. NOBODY WANTED HIM
The city decided to collect and keep the alligators in shelters with the hope that zoos, other shelters as well as people would want to offer them a forever home. Some alligators were lucky but nobody wanted Wally… He was devastated and hopeless…
18. SOMEONE NOTICED HIM
Wally had just celebrated his first birthday when a friend of his rescuer, Henney, noticed Wally and started to ask for more information about him. Henney’s friend was surprised that someone noticed Wally and was relieved because Wally was scheduled to be euthanized in the following month if he wasn’t able to find a forever home.
“If I wouldn’t have taken him he would have been killed,” Joie Henney, said.
17. HENNEY TOOK HIM IN
Henney’s heart melted when he saw Wally. It was love at first sight and he immediately decided to adopt him. Soon Wally had a forever home in York Haven, Pennsylvania. You’d guess that this story ends here but something amazing happened next. Click next to see what!
16. WALLY’S LIFE WAS SAVED
thedodo.comObviously Wally’s life was saved. He had just been saved from the most frightening thing and he had been adopted and offered a forever home. But Wally was about to say his very own “thank you” in a very special way. This is not something that you’d expect.
15. HENNEY’S STRUGGLES
Henney, the man who adopted Wally was battling some serious mental issues at the time. Henney was diagnosed with severe depression and his doctor suggested that it was time to start taking medication. Times were tough for Henney as he disliked the idea of starting the pills… Then something amazing happened.
14. HE WAS FEELING BETER
Henney started to realize that he felt much, much better when he spending time with Wally. He would spend hours playing, petting and strolling with him and amazingly his mental health was taking a 180 degrees turn.
13. HIS BEST PAL
It appeared that Wally was becoming Henney’s best friend and the more time they were spending together, the better was Henny feeling. Henney’s doctor knew about his patient’s special friend and figured out that if this worked, Henney might had a chance to avoid medication.
“When I came home and was around him, it was all OK,” Henney said. “My doctor knew about Wally and figured it works, so why not?”
12. RESCUED HIS RESCUER
Something amazing could be told about Wally! He was in the right path to rescue his rescuer. Wally seemed to realize when Henney was feeling bad and was doing everything to cheer him up. He was climbing on Henney when he was noticing that something was wrong. Then this happened.
11. HENNEY’S RECOVERY
Mental health scars usually take a long time to heal and Wally had made its life goal to help Henney recover. After 3 years of serious emotional support Henney’s doctor realized that Henney was a different man. He was almost out of depression! Wally played a big part on this and Henney was more than grateful.
10. EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMAL
Wally didn’t wait long to receive his honors. A month later, he was officially registered as an emotional support animal.
An emotional support animal (ESA), assistance animal, or support animal, is a companion animal (pet) that a medical professional says provides some benefit for a person disabled by a mental health condition or emotional disorder, according to Wikipedia.
9. WALLY WAS GROWING
Through all of this time, Wally was growing more and more and he was of a respected weight and length when he received the honor of being an emotional support animal. Did this stop him from supporting Henney?
8. THAT DIDN’T STOP HIM
Of course that wasn’t a problem for Wally and Henney couldn’t care less. Wally was over 5 feet long and he still managed to climb on Henney and cuddle with him.
“He likes to give hugs,” Henne said.
7. HENNEY WAS CAUTIOUS
Even though Wally was helping Henney years before being registered as an emotional support animal, Henny was cautious when taking Wally outside of his home because… he was an alligator. People tended to sometimes discriminate against Wally and were afraid of him even though Henney was reassuring them that Wally meant no harm.
6. ONLY WHERE HE WAS WELCOME
Henney was bringing Wally with him only to places where he knew for sure that Wally would be welcomed. He even took his best friend with him when he paid a visit to the local nursing home. Wally of course, cheered everyone up!

5. WALLY WILL GROW MORE
Henney and Wally’s future poses some serious problems because Wally is set to grow more. He can grow up to be 14 feet long and this could make thing complicated around the house.
4. HE’S TAKING CARE OF HIM
Henney has sworn to offer Wally a forever home for as long as he’ll be alive. Henney had started to build a specialized area in his yard for Wally to have a proper space to grow healthy,
3. HIS OWN “SHELTER”
Wally already has a pond that Henney built for him and he seems to enjoy every second in it. Henney realized that this specialized natural habitat that he was making for Wally could be offered as a forever home for other alligators that were seeking it. It’s not hard to guess what Henney did.
2. Making Friends
Henney decided to adopt two more alligators, Scrappy who is 2-years-old and Luna who is just eight-months-old! Wally was more than excited and Henney couldn’t be feel more blessed.
“Scrappy is still kinda small and Luna still likes to run around,” Henney said. “It’s Wally who gives the hugs.”
1. HIS SAVIOR
“He helps me keep my spirits up,” Henney said. “When I’m down it’s almost like he can sense it … He will come over to me on his own. He also has climbed into my bed with me when I’m not feeling well.”
