20 MLB Contracts That Are Sinking Their Team

What matters on every market seems to be is the quality/price ratio of anything. That’s the case in baseball, too. If a player is good, he is paid well as well. However, what happens when long-term contracts are signed and the players may not be as good for the amount of money that they make? So here is some of the worst MLB contracts that have ever being signed. Make sure not to miss #18, #17 and #15!

20.MIGUEL CABRERA

thesportster.com

One of the worst contracts in baseball was Miguel Cabrera’s contract. The Detroit Tigers signed Miguel to an eight-year extension and that was a really bad move for them. Although, last season Miguel played only 38 games, the fragile and declining athlete still made $30 million! That was a disaster for the Tigers who are still $154 million in the hole. However, the next contract seems to be a little bit worse!

19.ALBERT PUJOLS

thesportster.com

Although Albert Pujols is a very famous athlete, it is arguable that at the age of 38 he is highly overpaid! Last season he listed as one of the worst regulars in the game. Even though his bad performance in the season, he made $27 million in 2018. Moreover, Angels owe Pujols $87 million.

18.JASON HEYWARD

thesportster.com

Cubs never had the money in mind as the most important for them is the World Series title. However, in the case of Jason Heyward they should rethink it! Even though Heyward didn’t contributed much at the Word Series title, he still made $28 million. Also, for a collective WAR of about five, he has made about $80 million and the Cubs still owe him over $100 million going forward!

17.YEONIS CESPEDES

thesportster.com

Even though Yoenis Cespedes was a very important player in the NL Champion Mets in 2015, the last seasons seem to be bad for him. Cespendes, played in a very few games in last two seasons and he might be overcoming two major heel surgeries, so our hopes aren’t high. However, in 2018 he made $29 million.

16.JORDAN ZIMMERMANN

thesportster.com

Jordan Zimmermann hit Free Agent at the age of 30 while coming off some good seasons in Washington and we can say it was the perfect time. However, being paid $110 million was extreme for that player. He was Detroit’s worst starting pitchers in baseball ever since and he has earn $60 million for a combined 84 ERA+. Moreover, Detroit still has to pay Jordan $50 million for the next two seasons.

15.JOEY VOTTO

thesportster.com

Joey Votto is a really good player, who is paid $25 million a year. However, his team stays in the bottom of its division, so what’s the point of spending so much money on a player? The Reds seem to show some progress, but they should consider raising the salary of a player like Joey.

14.HOMER BAILEY

thesportster.com

Homer Bailey was a really good player in Cincinnati for a few seasons when Reds offered him a long-term deal to remain with them. Although he hasn’t put up an ERA+ over 100 since 2013 and the first time that he pitched over 100 innings in four years was in 2018, he still earned $21 million last year and the next year he will make $23 million.

13.IAN DESMOND

thesportster.com

With Ian Desmond, things were clear from the start. They weren’t many hopes that this decision could go well. He has made $30 million from the Rockies so far for a 78 OPS+ and 29 homers over two seasons. Moreover, Rockies still owe about $38 million.

12.CHRIS DAVIS

thesportster.com

Chris Davis seems to be one of the worst players in 2018 and even though he was so bad, he still made $23 million! And in the future he will make $92 million due to his contract. So, by far Chris Davis’s contract is probably one of the worst we have on our list!

11.ALEX GORDON

thesportster.com

Alex Gordon has received about $48 million by the Small Market Club since their World Series title and he has gain a little over three WAR. Royals, who are known for their small payrolls in the game, have to pay him about $20 million until his contract ends, but that amount of money is much for them.

10.ERIC HOSMER

thesportster.com

Last offseason Eric Hosmer singed with San Diego and Royal’s fans didn’t like that. Eric helped Kansas City to know some big days, but the amount of money that he received was huge. Even though he put up league average numbers, he gained 21 million in San Diego. Because he had made a small bump once, he is paid $123 million more in order to be the veteran leader  of the younger players.

9.WEI-YIN CHEN

thesportster.com

While playing for the Marlins, Chen pitched 133 innings and made $10 million this season. Even though the amount of money that he made isn’t sinking the boat, he will take about $42 million from Marlins according to his contract. And this money is really much for a pitcher that achieved only 76 ERA+ down year.

8.MARK MELANCON

thesportster.com

Mark Melancon signed in 2016 with Giants after having past him some good seasons. However, even Giants signed the reliever for $57 million, in the middle of his contract he put up only 14 saves and a 1.5 whip. Fortunately, after being paid $20 million by the Giants in 2018, he played decent enough.

7.GIANCARLO STANTON

thesportster.com

Even though Giancarlo Stanton was really good at the Yankees, fans seemed to believe otherwise. The problem seemed to be that the $300 million contract that he signed was extreme for the abilities that he showed on the field.

6.FELIX HERNANDEZ

thesportster.com

This one is a great example to show why is unfortunate to lock up pitchers long term. Mariners still owe him about $27 million for another season and he has already made from them about $200 million.

5.ROBINSON CANO

thesportster.com

Robinson Cano is also a Mariners’ player. Even if they pay the dues to Felix Mariners will still have to pay Cano about $100 million. More specifically, Cano will take an annual salary of $24 million until he’ll become 40!

4.YU DARVISH

thesportster.com

Even though Darvish didn’t play well in the World Series, he managed to sign up a $126 million contract for six years with the Cubs. He managed to throw just 40 innings and no long after that he had an injury that caused him to lose the season.

3.ZACK GREINKE

thesportster.com

Although Zack Greinke is a really good player the amount of money that he gets according to his contract with the Diamondbacks is huge! Moreover, Diamondbacks are still on the hook for $104 million over the next three years.

2.TROY TULOWITZKI

thesportster.com

Troy made about $40 million the past two seasons by playing 66 games for Toronto and his WAR was 0.1. Additionally, Blue Jays are still on the hook for $34 million over the next two years.

1.MANNY MACHADO

thesportster.com

Here we also have a case of a player that is good but not good enough for the money that he makes. An annual salary of $35-40 million sounds a bit overwhelming for one player, even though he may be good. What maters is the quality/price ratio of anything.
