If you have not heard a heartwarming story in a while, then we have the perfect one for you! This might be the most beautiful story you have heard this week, and for a good reason. We all know how little kids are perceptive and, when they are in the mood for it, they follow important rules. Thankfully, this little fella from Phelan, California, used the knowledge he acquired to save himself and his grandmother from their burning house.
Just two days before their house fire, Nathaniel Stocks went with his elementary school at a San Bernardino Fire Department firehouse. There, the firefighters taught the kids safety lessons!
20. A FIELD TRIP
From a very young age, community field trips are very important for kids who easily learn new things that can save their lives. They are fun and interactive, helping kids learn faster almost everything! For example, Nathaniel Stocks – who is only 5-years-old, went to the fire station with his class and learned what to do in case of a fire.
19. STOP, DROP, ROLL
“I don’t think it was a coincidence. I think it was a God thing,” said his mother Brianna Stocks in an interview after the incident. She explained that the boy was with his grandmother in the house. Nathaniel also explained in front of the camera what he learned from his field trip days before the fire…
18. HE CRAWLED TO HIS GRANNY’S ROOM
“They taught us how to stop, drop and roll on the field trip and I also learned that you have to crawl on the ground beneath the fire,” Nathaniel explained in the interview. He woke up at 1 a.m – it was the weekend. Something was wrong!
His room was filled with smoke, but he knew what to do!
17. THERE’S A FIRE!
Using the lesson “stop, drop and roll,” the boy crawled to the room where his grandmother was sleeping. He crawled under the smoke to wake up his grandma, Kimberly Racliss! Before leaving his room, he grabbed his cat, LeapFrog tablet and now he had to wake up his grandma. He had to yell a few time, but she eventually woke up…
16. HE SAVED THEIR LIVES
“I think he saved our lives for sure,” said Racliss, explaining that she was sound asleep when her grandson came to wake her up. She got up and saw the huge flames in the house. Thanks to Nathaniel, the two escaped right before their home was destroyed! But that’s not the end of the story yet!
15. THE BOY REMAINED CALM
Racliss said that the boy was so calm when he got her, adding that she “wouldn’t have made it out alive without him.” And believe it or not, but the grandma wanted to run back inside the burning house to find their Chihuahua, Tinkerbell. What happened next? Here is what the kid said…
14. TINKERBELL WAS INSIDE THE HOUSE!
“I told her that you can’t go into a burning house, you have to wait for the firefighters to get here,” said Nathaniel in the interview. Racliss was devastated that their Chihuahua, Tinkerbell Marie was trapped in the house and could not get back to rescue her. The fire crews were on their way, though and even did this #8!
13. THE FIRE CREW SAVED THE POOCH
Seven minutes after calling the firefighters, a fire crew arrived, and after almost 15 minutes, they not only saved Tinkerbell Marie but also controlled the fire. The little pooch was hiding behind a bathroom door, shaking scared. Thankfully, nobody got injured!
The only persons in the house were Nathaniel and Kimberly…
12. A SMART KID
Nathaniel’s parents were not in town. His dad was on a business trip, and his mom was close to Mammoth Mountain with some friends. As soon as she heard the news, she went back home. You will not believe what happened next – check out the happy kid at #6!
11. THE HOUSE BURNED DOWN
The grandmother was so happy Nathaniel remembered his lessons, but she knew she has a smart grandson: “Nice thing about Nathaniel he remembers everything. He’s a really smart kid and pays attention.”
What did Nathaniel say about his grandmother’s reaction to the fire? This kid is going places – check out his answer!
10. THE SPACE HEATER
“She said a bad word,” answered Nathaniel. Well, who wouldn’t cuss when seeing their home charred?
According to the preliminary investigation, the fire was sparked by a space heater, stated the officials. Here is what the mother said the interview with the local media about the fire…
9. SAN BERNARDINO FIRE DEPARTMENT
According to Stocks, who is a sales manager at a local hotel, her mother checked the space heater before Nathaniel went to bed, and it was on low medium. She added that she was “not sure how it caught really.”
Nonetheless, the San Bernardino Fire Department said Nathaniel is a hero!
8. A GUEST AT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
The boy went with his class to the San Bernardino Fire Department just two days before his house burned down and right on the scene, firefighters recognized Nathaniel from that field trip!
They were so impressed by Nathaniel’s courage and ability to keep calm, that they invited him to the fire department!
7. THE KID HAS A BADGE!
Believe it or not, but this kid handled the situation better than many adults! So, the firefighters gave him a special tour at the department, dressed him up as a firefighter and gave him not just a teddy bear, but also a plaque, a hat, and a badge! This little guy will surely become a firefighter when he grows up!
6. NATHANIEL WON’T TAKE OFF HIS BADGE!
Since he received his presents from the fire crew, Nathaniel now wants to become a firefighter too, and he won’t take off his hat and badge! “He’s always been a rule follower, but for him to learn all that on Thursday and then put it to use to save my life, his life and our pets’ lives is just unbelievable,” concluded his grandmother.
5. “HE’S MY HERO”
“He’s my hero,” added Racliss. And this little hero deserved so much more for his bravery. So the firefighters planned another surprise. This time, they took him on a shopping trip at Target. There, Nathaniel picked a cart full with toys to replace the lost ones in the fire. Guess what he chose!
4. A FIRE TRUCK
Among the toys he picked there was a Buzz Lightyear and a toy fire truck – probably to continue his training! The family lost almost all of their belongings and now have to live in a recreational vehicle until they restore the house… But they’re not alone!
3. HELPING OUT
People in their community have been bringing a lot of clothes, toys, and food for the family, and the mother said in an interview that “Nathaniel has more clothes and toys than he had before.” Why is this story so great?
2. SAFETY LESSONS
What makes this story truly incredible is that a simple community field trip turned this young man into a hero just by teaching him a few safety lessons! Thanks to the fire department, Nathaniel has saved his life, his grandma’s and his pooch!
1. HOMETOWN HERO
People on the internet have seen this story and said that Nathaniel is a courageous, bright boy and surely a future firefighter. One person from Phelan said that Nathaniel is now the “hometown hero.” It’s so great Nathaniel and his family got all the support they needed from the community!
