How to Spend a Big Spring Day With Your Children On a Small Budget

My children received this little gardening set for Easter, It was 3 or 4 dollars at the dollar store and it came with 3 little tools and a watering can. My mother in law who purchased the kits also got packets of 20 cent seeds which included two different types of squash, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, and PUMPKINS. The children especially loved the idea of the pumpkins because they will get to use them for halloween! I had so much fun planting the seeds with my children and they had a blast as well digging, planting, and watering.

This is a really inexpensive way to enjoy a great day with your children and it also gives them something to look forward to watching there seeds grow all summer long. The best time to plant is in the spring after the danger of frost. You usually have to thin most seedlings when they are 2 to 3 inches tall depending on the vegetable.

Even if you have no gardening experience what so ever this is fun. Watching the kids dig and the excitement on there faces is the best part. There are really easy to understand directions on the back of the packets as well. Just make sure that you plant your garden in a sunny area with adequate water and something will grow! If you live in an area with a lot of animals be sure to put a small deer fencing around your garden. You can pick that up at the dollar store really cheap.
By the way, your children are going to want to see the garden every day, they get so excited and can’t wait for the veggies or flowers to start growing.

  • Flowers are really fun to plant with the kids too. They love to pick them when they grow and they grow faster than vegetables.
  • My 3 and 5 year old planted roses last year and now they have a beautiful yellow rose bush and they give me roses all the time. It’s very rewarding for both of us.
  • Take your time and you can make a wonderful afternoon out of making a garden.
  • Take pictures!
