Captain America and The Avengers (Sega Genesis/1993)

Story:

Captain America and the Avengers (Hawkeye, Iron Man, and Vision) set out to stop the Red Skull.

Graphics:

Not entirely polished like some other side-scrollers on the Sega Genesis. The big bosses stick out more and seem to have more detail attended to them. Colors are unbelievably brighter and lighter than they should be (yes, I double checked my TV set as well just to make sure I wasn’t going crazy), making the texture seem even worse than it actually is. Room for improvement here.

Controls:

It’s like playing in an arcade. Pretty standard controls for the most part. No actual complaints.

Gameplay:

You can play in single player or two player mode as Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, or Vision. You will battle your way through different levels and environments as you pursue the evil Red Skull. You’ll come face-to-face with many familiar opponents such as Klaw, Whirlwind, The Living Laser, The Mandarin, Juggernaut, Wizard, Grim Reaper, Ultron, and Crossbones. You will also come into contact with cameos by other Avengers including Wonder Man, Quicksilver, Wasp, and Namor the Sub-Mariner.

Overall:

Graphic and sound issues bring this game down from where it should be. It’s fantastic for it’s arcade-like gameplay, however. I’m sure die-hard Marvel and comic book fans-alike will certainly enjoy it. There’s plenty of action and the controls don’t bud in the way of it. Please bare in mind that there are only four levels in this game, each a bit short I might add, so it is a relatively short game. Also, the low level of difficulty might prove this game to be less of a challenge than it should be.
