You can spend so much money buying jars of spices. Or you can spend that money on a packet of seed or some plants.
When you get the seeds or plants, they are called herbs.
Herbs are so easy to grow. You can grow them in pots or in the ground.
If they are grown in pots, they need to be watered more often than if planted in the ground. When in the ground, the roots seem to dig deeper and are able to find water from the earth.
Herbs will keep giving as long as you keep harvesting.
Fresh herbs are great for so many things. Sometimes you can use dried, but other times there is just no subtitute for fresh.
To be able to keep the herbs going, you may need to pick more than you can use at this time.
This is a good time to preserve some of your herbs for the winter.
Many herbs that you buy will say they are an annual, but will in fact reseed themelves and come up the following year. Some examples of this are basil and cilantro. In fact if you let the cilantro go to seed and the seeds drop, you will end up with tons of cilantro the next year. When cilantro seeds form, you can harvest them and grind them for use as the spice coriander.
Herbs are great to grow, don’t take up much space, and give so much back.
You will discover some really great flavors by growing your own herbs.
