Our real self is not visible but our actions, thinking and words can mirror who the real us looks like. The scriptures state that “God is Spirit” John 4:24. If God is Spirit and we are created in the image of God, then our spirit person is the real us. This is why Christ said, “the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth—for the Father is seeking such to worships Him” John 4: 23.
If we want to know who we are and how we look shouldn’t we start with the one who created us? Why are so many people, even those who claim to know God, dissatisfied with their outward appearance? It is suggested that perhaps it is because we really don’t know who God is. If we know Him then perhaps we can start knowing ourselves truthfully.
It is amazing at how people work on improving the tent through feeding it, exercise, cosmetic surgery, the use of make and the like but do very little improve the real person. According to scripture, “In Him (God) was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it” John 1:4-5. We are in the dark without the light of God for He is the “light of men”. That light is shining in the midst of the darkness in the world surrounding you.
The light to the truth of our being and of life is found in God. This light reveals our true being veiled by the darkness in the world. When Christ guides your life you will not need to stumble in the fakeness of the world. This is why Paul calls on the true believer not to be “ conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” Romans 12: 2
Christ said that “He who finds his life will lose it, and he lose his life for my sake will find it” Mathew 10:39. When we make this world rewards, (beauty or physical looks, leisure, power, popularity, financial security) our idols, the more we discover how empty they really are. This is all vanity and very temporal and is wrongly based on the worldly standard of how to look great or attractive.
The Flesh (carnal, outer image, tent) “lusts against the spirit (the inner person, the real you) and the Spirit against the flesh—-these are contrary to one another” Galatians 5:17. The works of the flesh which most people are captivated by according to Apostle Paul are “evident” and include “adultery, fornication and lewdness” Galatians 5: 19. This is why we must be transformed in our thinking for us to understand ourselves as God knows us.
The word of God furthers states that creation “eagerly awaits the revealing of the son of God. For creation was subjected to futility”, but creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glamorous liberty of the children of God”. And we are eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body” Romans 8:19, 2 1, 22, 23.
