Today most of us rely on internet and computer for the majority of tasks that we need to perform in the course of our day-to-day life and business activities. Starting with online news, information and developments we use the internet for online transactions, education-related information, medical information and lot of other things. With the progress of technology there are innumerable other gadgets too that have come up that use the internet to function.

Internet is not only for convenience rather sometimes it also allows malicious agents like hackers and cybercriminals who intend to infect your PC with an ulterior motive of stealing data and then befooling users.

Online threats such as viruses, malware, spyware and others target the operating system (OS) and the network of your PC and in this way cause huge damage to the data and software. In order to prevent such threats you need to update yourself with certain aspects as discussed below.

First of all lets understand what is an OS meant for and how it works.  All the PC users have heard this term as it is used very often and is a common computer related term.

The OS is an essential component of your PC which is needed to process data quickly and efficiently. While you use two or more than two OSes, you need a Local Area Network (LAN) for the purpose of sharing data. Wide Area Network (WAN) is used to connect LANs and thus the web of PCs connected through LAN and WAN forms the internet. The computers located in various parts of the world are notified via an Internet Protocol (IP) address. Computers exchange data and communicate with each other using the internet.

As we know that the internet also has also certain negatives apart from its aforesaid benefits. A small problem could prove disastrous for PCs connected to the internet. It is of no secret that data exchanged through the internet has to travel through various gateways before reaching to the final destination. Because of these reasons, internet users need to employ or enhance security at all the points from where data has to pass through.

It is of great significance for all the internet users to know and understand about all those platforms from which data may be initiated while using the internet.

Port and Addresses

The Internet Protocol is identified with a unique number on which many things depend such as the target PC where the data has to be delivered. The transfer of data takes place through dedicated port numbers assigned within the operating system.

Online criminals or hackers involved in phishing or online fraud usually pretend themselves to belong to an authentic or genuine organization. In such cases if the user knows about the IP address or the port number he can prevent such incidents. By having knowledge about fake IP address, the user can foresee the incident and thus stop such miscreants from committing e-mail fraud.

Firewalls

Firewall is an essential security component which performs a lot of important things apart from filtering unknown data packets coming via web. In order to keep harmful things at bay it distinguishes networks, protects the PC identity and authorizes data transfer.

It is recommended to enable the firewall at two points such as one at the network and other at the local operating system. Once enabled, it filters out unwanted and malicious data and prevents them from entering into the system. It makes difficult for hackers to infect the PC and also keeps the identity of the PC secret.

Servers

Lets try to understand what is meant by a server. A specific PC which is used to access internet, store and retrieve data, interact with customers, perform programmed functions and provide platform to enable printers, is called a server.

For better protection of the servers, it is recommended to put them in a room or place which is least exposed to natural calamities. Moreover, only administrators should have access to the server and the other users should only be able to access it with limitations to certain data and information. While configuring the server, you must ensure that it is free from intrusion and it doesn’t allow software downloading in order to prevent any security breach or data loss.

Considering the above discussed facts about operating system and network security it becomes imperative for all home users as well as small and medium sized enterprises to take appropriate security measures to prevent online threats in order to protect operating system as well as networks.
