Dental health is an important factor in order to prevent problems such as tooth decay, gum diseases, dental plaque and tartar, halitosis, etc. There are a number of dental clinics in Pune that provide treatments such as routine dental examinations, tooth extractions, dentures, dental implants, crowns and bridges, gum treatments, and others.

Undergoing preventive dentistry is one of the best ways to avoid the onset of gum and teeth problems. The main aim of this dental practice is to prevent tooth decay, damage, or disease. Good oral hygiene and practices promote and maintain optimal oral health. Dental exams can also be life saving as the dentist may also look for any signs of potential cancerous lumps or tumours.

Levels of Preventive Dentistry

Optimum dental care is not restricted to dental health alone. Optimal oral health is indicative of a healthy and disease-free body. A number of health complications like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer can be prevented by following good oral health practices. Preventive dentistry programs encompass regular dental exams and tooth cleaning procedures. There are also many home methods that can be followed. The three levels of preventive dentistry are mentioned below:

  • Primary

Good dental hygiene starts at home. Proper brushing and flossing are the best ways to practice preventive dentistry. The most common preventive methods are using dental rinses and mouthwash. These help prevent build-ups of plaque, remove debris stuck in the teeth, and reduce the level of harmful bacteria in the mouth. They also prevent dental caries, orthodontic anomalies, and other gum and teeth diseases.

  • Secondary

The secondary preventive level encompasses cavity filling, root canals, tooth restorations, applications of dental sealants or installation of caps and crowns. Regular dental examinations, teeth extractions, periodic radiography, early diagnosis of pathological problems and their treatments, etc. are also followed. These methods help prevent further damage of the teeth and gums.

  • Tertiary

The tertiary preventive method consists of all treatments and measures that reduce complications and also prevent their progression. Peridontium surgery, prosthetic dental sanitation, treatment of dental pulp disorders, and dental prostheses repairs like dental bridges, are considered to be tertiary treatment methods.

Preventive dentistry benefits individuals of all age groups. A routine dental care regimen should be inculcated in childhood as it helps prevent a number of teeth and gum problems in the future.
