Erikson presented eight stages of development. Let us look at Erikson’s view on adolescence to young adulthood stage. He states the adolescence stage as the ego-identity versus role-confusion. Communication can be expressed in writing or in speaking. It is important that you are clear about your goal in taking your message across to the other person. You should use short sentences to help the other person understand you better. If you use long sentences, this may confuse the person and they might disconnect from what you are saying. Especially in school coursework, it is required that you write with clear ideas. The normal protocol used in writing essays can be used for speaking to someone.

Concise- you should keep your conversation brief and to the point. Sometimes in nervousness you may start using filler words, or you may use unnecessary sentences. Therefore, being self aware is so important because you will be careful in not repeating your point several times and in different ways.

Concrete- Remember that the person or group you are communicating to needs to have a clear picture of what you are saying to them. Your communication message should be simple and understandable.

Correct- When you are speaking, if you start to stutter or if your tongue does not quite role right then you slow down and correct your speech. In anxiety or when hurrying to talk, speech gets unclear , and stuttering can become an issue, therefore,missing on some important words.

Coherent- When you are communicating, always let your ideas flow consistently relevant to the subject. This helps the other person to focus strictly on what you are saying. Being coherent in communication is one of the drawbacks that everyone experiences. Sometimes a conversation is started with a subject and ends up with the other subject. Remember you are in control of your communication. Especially if you are presenting in school or presenting in a group, you should be aware about your subject and keep it consistent throughout until the end.

Complete- Your communication is complete when you have successfully expressed your ideas and thoughts.

Courteous- Communication is courteous when you are empathetic to the listeners or readers point of view. Your tone, honesty and openness in the conversation are the most important ingredients to have a smooth conversation. For example, If you are travelling on a bike and on the street by mistake someone just passed by in front of your bike absent minded. The first impulsive action will be to yell at that person and tell them off. So, instead of quick impulsive action you might just let the other person know that they are wrong through calm gesture. If you are aggressive with the other person, they might start getting aggressive as well. Therefore, remember that your courteousness in the communication is an important asset.

The seven Cs are the polite communication skills. They teach you to develop your personality suitable to societal norms. As a student or a professional, it is important to learn the seven Cs because people look at you with some expectation. If your communication skills are not up to the mark then people, might not take you seriously rather they may think that you are uneducated.
