How many comebacks does Robert Downey, Jr. get in one career? http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/entertainment/Robert+Downey-51316.html No matter, he got another big on in 2008 after staying clean and sober since 2001. He had some roles he could sink his ample acting chops into: The cocky playboy/superhero in Iron Man and a deluded Method actor wearing blackface in Tropic Thunder. He also has the lead in the upcoming “Sherlock Holmes”.
Surprise. Surprise. Totally unexpected came the comeback of formerly butt of late night jokes, actor Mickey Rourke who just received a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in his role in The Wrestler. He accepted the award humbly saying, “This has been a very long road back for me. Several years ago I was almost out of this business.” Then he thanked his dogs, living and dead.
And who would have thought that Britney Spears http://www.people.com/people/gallery/0,,20243114_10,00.html could pull her career out of the muck and mayhem she’d let it lapse into while not paying attention to it? In the first week of its release her CD sold half a million copies to loyal fans who apparently forgave her everything.
Paris Hilton managed to pull her little career out from under the smirking late night comedian’s acerbic quips about her non-talent celebrity status. She got back in the spotlight with a video on funnyordie.com where she could be seen as her sarcastic self giving a response to John McCain’s comparison of her celebrity status to Barack Obama’s.
Another butt of late night jokes ever since his seen-round-the-world couch jumping on Oprah, Tom Cruise http://www.thedailytube.com/video/15046/best-comeback-celeb-of-2008-tom-cruisemanaged to get himself taken seriously as an actor rather than as a Scientology nutcase who criticized Brooke Sheillds for using anti-depressants for postpartum depression. He may have turned off some fans with his ravings, but others forgave him and gave him another chance. He was the funniest guy in Ben Stiller’s very funny movie “Tropic Thunder” where he played a swaggering, bald movie executive with a bad temper and a foul mouth.
The Spice Girls, yes those girls, made a comeback in 2008. Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh and Sporty Spice returned to let the world know they weren’t just a freak phenomenon of the 90’s. Girl power returned in 2007 with their reunion world tour. “The Return of the Spice Girls” World Tour first London date sold out in 38 seconds believe it or not.
Speaking of Brooke Sheilds, who expected to see her again after “Suddenly Susan” went off the air and she settled down to have a couple of kids? Well she is back bigger than ever starring in NBC’s “Lipstick Jungle” as Wendy Healy, who like Brooke herself, works to balance her work and her family. The popularity of the show has even gotten her an appearance on Project Runway where she took a turn looking more radiant than ever.
Mary-Kate Olsen earned her comeback on television’s “Weeds” and in the movie “The Wackness”. As if that weren’t enough, she also co-authored a best-seller, “Influence”, with her sister Ashley.
Axl Rose made a comeback with a band of all new fresh faces still called Guns and Roses. The new band still play the 80’s nostalgic hits such as “Welcome to the Jungle”, “Live and Let Die” and “Sweet Child of Mine”. Hard core fans were happy enough with the substitute band to make it a successful comeback for Axll on the release of “Chinese Democracy”.
And should we mention Cloris Leachman and her comeback courtesy of “Dancing with the Stars”? Let’s not and say we did.
