The Master Cleanse or Lemonade diet.

There has been a lot of discussion around the Master Cleanse system over the last few years, especially when celebrities come out and explain their recent weight loss to the system. So I thought i would dig a little deeper into this system that so many follow.

It is often called the lemonade diet for the simple reason that during the cleanse you do not eat any solid food, your source of nutrients is the lemonade. This may sound crazy, and it did to me when I first heard it. I decided to investigate and find out the facts.

The first thing I discovered is that this system is not new. It was developed by Stanley Burroughs in the sixties.  The approach is not a diet, it is a way of detoxify the body, that is why it is called a cleanse.

Generally weight lose is also achieved. There are many theories on why, these range from the obvious reduction in calories to the more long term explanation that your body will not crave the same toxic junk after the detox.

The basic idea of the cleanse is to fast for at least 10 days. During the fast you can only drink water and lemonade.  The lemonade is a home made mixture containing fresh lemons, a special grade of maple syrup and cayenne pepper. The theory is that this contains all the basic nutrients and minerals you body needs for the fast.  This is obviously a huge point of discussion from all angles of the diet and health world.

The other big area of discussion is the Salt Water flush. Basically you are flushing your colon out by drinking a mixture of water and salt. The goal is for all the toxins and junk to latterly get flushed out of your body.

All of these factors led me to the conclusion that this all sounds very interesting and something I should try to get a better understanding. The best way I can think of is to try the cleanse myself and report my findings and experiences.

You can track my progress and thoughts during the cleanse on my blog.
