The group of 3 islands comprises of Utila, Guanaja and Roatan which is covered with seas that have turquoise-blue streams of water and thousands of species of marine life. These two aspects of Bay Islands have combined to transform this formerly unknown and distant location to a hub of tourists. It is well known for water sports that could be diving in greatest barrier reefs located in Caribbean Sea or snorkeling, swimming at a close distance from white-sand filled secret beaches.

Similar to other countries of Central America, the Bay Islands was home of several tribal groups till the arrival of Europeans. Christopher Columbus was the explorer who claimed of finding the islands and making it an acquisition of Spain, when he came on a fourth voyage towards this region in 1502. For two centuries after that, Britishers and Spanish armies battled for gaining control of that area which was mainly used as a harbor for ships, supply of food and trading of slaves, that was later abolished. Until the 19th century, both Garífuna tribe and people who were slaves previously came on this island for starting of a new life. Today, a blend of these races and cultures plus an overall relaxing climate makes the islands ideal for travel. It is very common for many American nationals and European citizens to settle in this place permanently although they might have come just for spending their vacations for a week or maybe two.
