The B-Meg Lllamados scratched first win on their best of 7 championship series of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup. TNT failed to capitalize on their expertise on their three point shooting as well as in their gift shots – free throws. With these, the Llamados imposed their strengths in rebounding particularly in the defensive end. A total of 51 rebounds were collected by B-Meg, just two point shorter with their (TNT) counterpart. On the other hand, TNT managed to draw out 17 offensive rebounds; while B-Meg had 14.

Strong offensive rebounding had its pros and cons. First, getting offensive rebounds increase the total collected rebounds for the team; as well as the opportunity to score again without the hassle of crossing the half court line. Second, it could suggest lower field goal percentage for the team. True enough, B-Meg made 37 out 67 attempts (53.6%) while the Talk N Text barely reached 50% field goal (21 out 50).

From another perspective, the statistics does not show much difference, as the end result yielded only a 6 point margin in favour of B-Meg. The 13,000 expectators at the Smart Araneta Coliseum got the value for their money and time.

Imports Denzel Bowles and Donnel Harvey matched perfectly spending virtually inside the floor (Bowles 40 minutes and Harvey 39 minutes). Both scored 25 points, grabbed 10+ rebounds, gave 3 assists and one block shot apiece.

The difference now lies on the local players, especially on the Llamados side, P.J. Simon managed to solidly back up Bowlez while playing only 24 minutes. He made 18 points on a 9 out of 11 shooting or 81%.

Furthermore, TNT’s poor free throw shooting slipped their chances of overtime or the W. The free throw percentage does not show statistical significance because both teams are within the 40% range. The actual shots made against attempted revealed that TNT missed 20 gift shots.

Coach Chot Reyes uttered two words: “Free Throws” He added “You cannot win a game if you miss those free throws. If we had missed (just) 50 percent of what we missed, we could have won by two. But that’s their job. I cannot shoot those for them.”
