I remember a time when it was perfectly legal to drive whilst talking on your mobile phone. It was not only legal but indeed also very cool.. Of course, as with everything that makes life that little more fun, a law was brought in which outlawed the use of driving whilst on your phone. In truth I am not underestimating the connection between road casualties and the use of mobile phones. Ironically a lot of the distractions on the road are actually caused by things which are designed to keep both drivers and pedestrians safe. The biggest contributor has to be related to keeping the speed down. The highways and roads are absolutely littered with signs telling us what we should and should not do. Speed limits signs, speed camera signs, cycle lane signs are all potential hazards. With so many different speed limits to adhere to motorists are continually hit with points and penalties which could have the knock on effect of damaging their livelihood. Therefore many cars now have on onboard warning system to inform them if the are going too fast. Should the driver get lost whilst on the telephone then they can simply input the information into their sat nav which will guide them on their way. The government still insists that keeping the speed limit down is the answer to keeping drivers safe. Or is it just that the fact that breaking the speed limits a very lucrative business.
