Your career is what you make of it. So if you want to be successful, you need to work hard to achieve that success. Now success can mean different things to different people, but suffice to say that if you want to progress in your career, you’ll be aiming higher than the position you’re already in.

With the following tips, and a little hard work, you’ll be ascending that career ladder quicker than you realise.
Have a Plan
This is the first thing you need to consider. You don’t necessarily need to know the exact position you’d like to end up in, but planning a route and the goals you need to achieve to get ahead will help in your career progression. If you change your mind mid-route, then there are other paths to take, but if you’re keen to progress, you need to plan your next steps carefully.
Start by looking at someone within your department or company that is slightly senior to you. More often than not, the reason they’re where they are is through hard work and determination. Ask them questions, see what they did, and use this as guide to your next position within the company.
Stay True To Your Values
This isn’t to get confused with being stubborn and never compromising on decisions at work, as this is negative and won’t get you anywhere, except nearer the exit door. Rather, it’s referring to your values at work, the way you perform your tasks, and the way you’d like others to perform too. When you stick to these values, it shows integrity and consistency, and for any manager and director, seeing that you’re true to yourself, as well as consistent shows stability and trust.
Show Willingness to Take on New Challenges
Initiative is a behavioural trait that can have a huge impact on your career. This means that wherever possible take on a new challenge at work, one that isn’t necessarily within your job description. This doesn’t mean treading on other people’s toes, as this could have a negative effect for you and your colleagues, but rather seek out new opportunities or being the first to take on additional work when available. This further demonstrates a hard working attitude, but also leadership skills as you’re taking on extra responsibility.
Train and Learn
The benefits here are immense. Not only will you be adding more strings to your bow, but this also shows a positive attitude to your seniors. If you’re willing to take on additional training to help you perform your role, then it shows a desire on your behalf to succeed and do well. It also shows that you’re serious about your role, and that you want to better yourself at the company. It also means that you will understand a lot more about your role, and as a result, you’ll either be able to work quicker, or know a great deal more to help with your day-to-day tasks.
Remember that it’s not always about you at work, there are other people there too; and the key for any successful business is having a team which work well together, so be sure to help out colleagues wherever possible. Share with others what you have learnt and experienced. This is a great way to practice if you ever take on a mentor, or you take on a position of responsibility; because you can teach others and show them the ropes, as it were. This is far more beneficial for the company than if you were to keep all of your ideas and experiences to yourself.

This one goes without saying, but if you’ve demonstrated the abovementioned skills and traits, then automatically you would have shown a positive attitude. However, there is a great deal more that you can do to show this. Take a keen interest in what the business is doing on the whole. Learn more about what other colleagues do on a day-to-day basis, and the processes involved too. Make sure you get involved in events and meet-ups outside of work too, such as industry related networking events. This kind of positivity will reflect well on you and your future career prospects.
