Ladakh means “Land of Passes”. It’s also described as Mini Tibet, Land of Lamas, Moonland, Heaven of Adnenture and with many more attributes. But it’s a place worth visiting.
Ladakh is liked by all: whether it is an eager traveller, fun visitor, adventure lover, environmentalist, monk in search of peace, photographers……and so on. It’s serene beauty and moon land type landscape mesmerise the visitor in first sight. No matter how bad photographer you are, you just click your camera anywhere and you will become a nature photographer. So if you have not yet decided to visit a place this summer plan for Ladakh.
Leh is the major city of Ladakh which is connected by air. Three daily flights are available from Delhi of Air India, Kingfisher and Jet. the fares soars high from mid April so check availability of cheaper tickets on convenient dates. It’s also connected by road from Srinagar and Manali via Zozila and Rohtang passes respectively. But these passes get closed in winters and remain close for 4-5 months. This year Zozila is expected to open in last week of April and Rohtang by mid May. Adventure lovers like to visit Leh via Rohtang Pass from Manali which is situated at nearly 475 kms from Leh. But the journey from Manali to Leh is overwhelming and life time experience.
Remember, the Leh is situated at the hight of 11500 ft from sea level which is considered as high altitude. So plan properly. Do not make trip in hurry. Doctors advise at least 48 hours acclimatisation rest after reaching Leh and before doing any sight seeing. So don’t forget this advice and have proper rest.
There are many restricted areas in Leh. Visit tourism office to know the details. You’ll have to apply for Inner Line Permit to visit many places. You can apply it through any travel agents which are available in plenty in the Leh town. The applicants need to pay only Rs. 20 per person. The foreigners will be allowed only in group of four. But groups are easily formed with the help of travel agents.
You can hire taxis locally. Remember outside taxis are not allowed to carry tourist in Ladakh.
Good hotels at reasonable prices are available easily.
