Distance Education

Distance education is a relatively modern teaching method.  The basic concept is that learner in a place different from the source, who may be the book or the teacher or even a group of students. It is transfer of an educational program from its position on the campus of an educational institution to geographically separate locations. It aims to attract students who can not under normal circumstances to continue an educational program in a traditional.

Distance learning, sometimes called e-learning, is a formalized teaching and learning system specifically designed to be carried out remotely by using electronic communication. Because distance learning is less expensive to support and is not constrained by geographic considerations, it offers opportunities in situations where traditional education has difficulty operating. Students with scheduling or distance problems can benefit, as can employees, because distance education can be more flexible in terms of time and can be delivered virtually anywhere.

Distance education began through some European universities and the U.S. in the late seventies by sending teaching materials by the e-mail to the student, and these materials include books, tapes and video tapes, as a student in turn sends the assignments of study using the same method. The student was required to attend to the headquarters of the university to perform the final test by which the certificate is awarded to the student. Then it developed in the late eighties to be through channels. The British network news was leader in this field. In the early nineties the Internet emerged as a strong alternative communication quick and easy then ivory was replaced by e-mail to send e-light materials and assignments.

In the late nineties and early this century websites that offer an integrated service to education was appeared through the Web, this service that included a self-learning content in addition to the possibilities of communication and sharing with classmates through the same site or e-mail. The newly emerged classes interactive which allow the teacher or lecturer to deliver lessons directly on the scores of students in all parts of the globe without being restricted to the place then these tools have developed to allow the participation of students in dialogue and intervention.

The objectives of distance education:

1. Contribute to raise the cultural level, scientific and social with members of the community.

2. Fill the gap in faculty members and qualified trainers in some areas

3. Work to provide educational resources and multi-variety, which helps to reduce the    individual differences between trainees through support for training institutions with media, variety of teaching techniques and interactive.
