Blizzard Entertainment has announced a real money auction house feature in the upcoming release of Diablo 3. This feature will allow players to do what third party websites have been doing for years, making money off of the items and currency earned in the game. There will be many fees included with this new feature but it will give players the opportunity to actually earn real world money just by playing a video game. Blizzard has not officially announced the exact fees that will be included with each transaction but have been testing the real money auction house in the Diablo 3 beta.
Most games these days of this scale have auction house features that allow players to buy and sell in game items with in game currency. Blizzard Entertainment will not be placing gold or items on the RMAH so the Diablo 3 economy will be controlled by the players. Some people think this will ruin the game since gamers with the most real world money will be able to buy all of the best gear and dominate but they are not looking at the big picture. Blizzard Entertainment has already announced that Diablo 3 will NOT be an easy game. Completing Infero mode and some of the later difficulties will still require skill, regardless of how much real world money you have. The random loot generator will also make it much more difficult for players to find the gear that fits their character best so these items should have no problem selling at the auction house.
Prices will most likely change hourly when Diablo 3 is first released, while players are still leveling up their characters. Things are likely to stabalize once everyone starts reaching level cap. The price for items and gold will still change with each transaction but you will probably see gold and items going for close to the same price once people find the best ways to farm items. Don’t expect to become rich playing Diablo 3 because it will not happen. You might make some good money here and there, but remember there will be millions of other people trying to do the same thing and you will need to keep your items up at reasonable prices. If you plan on trying to make some money using the Diablo 3 real money auction house, be sure to keep an eye on different pricing daily and try to undercut everyone else that is trying to sell the same items as you. You may not get the amount of money you want for a certain item, but it is much better than that item not selling at all. Only time will tell how players will utilize this new feature but myself and millions of other gamers are hoping the real money auction house will revolutionize gaming. I would love to start seeing this new features added in upcoming MMORPGS and other games to allow players to earn money while they are spending time doing what they love.
