Come On! No More Excuses!

What’s the first thing you do when you go to the beach or the pool with your children? The very first thing we do is apply sunscreen! Every exposed stretch of skin is targeted! We cover faces, chests, back, legs, arms and even their heads. We even buy sun-screen filtered clothing to protect their sensitive skin from the sun.

After we feel comfortable that we have safe-guarded them as well as we could from any damage from the sun, we apply sunscreen to ourselves. We cover all exposed skin and we put on sunglasses and sometimes even a hat!

Do you suggest applying sunscreen to your husband or boyfriend? Yes, I know that they will object and give you reasons why they don’t need it, but don’t believe them. They do!

Let’s look at some of the reasons they don’t want to apply sunscreen:

1. It just washes off in the water anyway. That may be true, but it’s also true for you and your kids. All sunscreen needs to be applied numerous times during your time out in the sun, and especially after you get out of the water. Water-Resistant sunscreen does not mean it is water-proof, just that it will stay on your skin if it gets wet. You still need to reapply it according to the manufacturers’ suggestions. Usually every few hours.

2. They make me feel greasy. Try to find a sunscreen that is water or alcohol-based. They are less greasy. Keep trying different products until you find the one that’s right for you.

3. They make me smell like a girl! Look for unscented formulas. They give you the same protection, but don’t have any scent.

4. They make my hands greasy and I can’t play volleyball, tennis, etc. Try using a sunscreen for sports. These usually are absorbed quicker and won’t leave any greasy feeling on your hands or body.

Whatever their objection is, you can find a solution. There are many different types of sunscreen products on the market today. The many advantages of using sunscreen far out-weigh the few inconveniences of NOT using it!

Point out that besides the chance of developing skin cancer, the sun’s rays also make your skin leathery and dry, which gives the appearance of old, aged skin. No one wants to look older than they are!

And, for the men who work outdoors, these suggestions pertain to year-round. Working outside in the sun leaves your skin vulnerable to the sun’s rays every day! Sunscreen should be worn, as well as shirts, while working out in the sun!
