Other techniques like using wind towers to cool the building were also used. The modern air conditioners came into existence during 19th Century.
In 1902 Willis Havilland Carrier used the first large scale air conditioning system based on electricity. Since the time it was invented, it has taken many reformations to suit the need of the time and people.

Though air conditioning is considered a luxury for residential use in countries where there is not much of variation in temperature conditions, it is a necessity in places which are prone to extremes of temperatures. They are also a must in some manufacturing units where lot of heat is generated. This requires commercial air conditioning to be done.

The invention of air conditioning brought lot of changes in the concept of building residential apartments and also commercial complexes. Earlier these building had to be planned depending on natural ventilation. Commercial air conditioning has changed this concept and the buildings became taller and wider. The air conditioner is used in the hospitals, more importantly in operation theatres to filter the air and also maintain the temperature and humidity levels. They are also a must in pharmaceutical industries and research laboratories. Air conditioners have increased the hygiene and comfort of living at commercial and domestic level.Air conditioning is the technique of modifying the air temperature inside the premises to suit the
