The Muppet Show: Season 1 Special Edition DVD set is fun to own for both adults and children. In fact, it may be more appropriate for adults. I actually found a lot of the content questionable for kids, in fact.
Regardless, this is a 4 disk set that contains the entire first season of The Muppet Show. There is an outer box of cardboard that the disk holder slips into, like a book. The artwork is really just a green and yellow pattern which is probably meant to be the chest of Kermit the Frog. The back of the box has a couple of small pictures and the write up about the season, as well as listing the special features.
The DVD case does show a close up of Kermit on the front. It opens to reveal a funny shot of Kermit, Miss Piggy and others. Open that, and you get the disks, which have one DVD atop the other in the middle and right sections. I wish they had used the back side of the Kermit cover to place one of the disks. I just hate having to remove disk 3 in order to get to disk 4. It is plain and simply annoying.
The disks all have bright artwork picturing various Muppet characters, so I like that.
The menus are set up in a humorous fashion. Whereas a TV show might just have its theme song playing over and over again, the Muppets use various characters nipping at the viewer to hit the button. It is funny and unique.
Each episode has the option of including Muppet Morsels, little pop ups of trivia as you watch. You have to turn that feature on in order to get the pop ups.
Disk 4 has a few extras, including the original pitch to sell The Muppet Show, a gag reel of bloopers, and the original pilot. The pitch is super funny and creative. The gag reel had me wondering if these were staged goofs, or actual funny moments from certain outtakes. The pilot was intriguing because while it had elements of the show that eventually aired, you could really see how in need of improvement the original episode was. Major changes were made.
I love the Muppets and am happy to have this in my collection.
