Dublin, Ireland is a Great Place to Visit

Dublin in the Republic of Ireland is a great place to visit.   The first settlement in Dublin was established by the Vikings in 841 and it remained a Danish town until 1014.  Dublin has had a very up and down history.

 Dublin has many great attractions for tourists any time of the year.  When you are in Dublin you must visit the Trinity College and Library.  Queen Elizabeth I college was started in 1592 and was renovated in 1759.  There are more than 1 million books and manuscripts in the library.  O’Connell Street is another must see place.  There are many statues and monuments on this street.  There are many large and beautiful homes also.  The most impressive building is the General Post Office.  There are 2 museums that are great.  The Museum, of Archeology and History features exhibits about prehistoric and medieval Ireland.  The National Museum of Decorative Arts and History in Collins Barracks has some great exhibits.

An interesting place to visit is St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a great place to visit and is Ireland’s largest church and a National Cathedral.  The church was founded in 1191 by Archbishop Comyn.  There was extensive renovation done to the church between 1844 and 1869.  There are still parts of the old church that were incorporated into the renovation.

The National Gallery was opened in 1864 and is another must see place.   There are many pieces of Irish and European art displayed here.

The Kilmainham Gaol is a famous European prison that is worth a visit.  It was originally a Viking fortress and over the centuries it has been torn down and rebuilt several times.

A must see place is Phoenix Park.  It is the world’s largest enclosed municipal park.  You can spend many days exploring this place.  The residences of the Irish President and the Ambassador of the United States are located here.  There are cricket and polo fields located here.  You must visit the Phoenix Statue and the Papal Cross.

The best way to take in the sights in Dublin is to walk.  A walking tour of Dublin will take most people 2 to 6 hours depending on how many times you stop along the way.  If you plan on taking a walking tour of Dublin the best place to start from is at the O’Connell Bridge.  The O’Connell Bridge is wider than it is long.  You must visit the O’Connell Memorial with all of its great statues.

Dublin is famous all over the world for its pubs. Dublin has over 1,000 pubs to keep its visitors entertained.  The Temple Bar is a very popular place.  Whenever you go to a restaurant be sure to go hungry as the portions of food are very large.  Dublin restaurants are famous for their great seafood.  Smoked salmon and oysters are favorites with many people.

Golf is a favorite pass time in Dublin.  There are over 60 great golf courses located in the Dublin area.  Dublin is a very scenic and historic place with much to offer its visitors.  When touring Dublin take your time and enjoy what the city has to offer.
