There are many reasons why some men choose to shave their head. Some men embrace the shaved head look because it is low-maintenance. Others shave their head as a way to cope with losing their hair. Still others choose to shave their head because they like the way it looks. Even though there are many reasons for shaving the head, the technique is still the same. Here are some tips that will make shaving the head easier.
Use the right tools for the job. Cheap disposable razors and low-quality shaving cream will result in razor bumps, irritation, and nicks. Since the skin of the scalp is thinner and more sensitive than the skin of the face, it is a good idea to use better quality razors and shaving gels.
Start on hair that is already short. If the hair is more than 1/4 inch in length, cut the hair close to the scalp with a set of electric clippers before attempting to shave. If the head is already shaved, don’t allow the hair to grow too long before shaving it again. It is best to shave the head every day or every other day, depending on the rate of hair growth.
Pre-soften the hair before shaving. For a closer and more comfortable shave, allow 5-10 minutes for the shaving cream or gel to penetrate into the hair. The longer the shaving cream is left on the scalp, the easier it will be to shave.
Hold skin taut while shaving. If the skin is stretched tight while shaving, the result will be a closer shave with less irritation. This is especially true in the back of the head.
Rinse the blade often. Once hair begins to accumulate between the blades of the razor, it increases the chances of nicks and cuts. Rinse the blade under hot water after every two or three strokes for best results.
Maintain the scalp’s health after shaving. Shaving will certainly remove hair, but it will also remove moisture from the skin. This is because shaving causes millions of microscopic abrasions on the skin which allows moisture to escape. Always massage a small amount of moisturizing cream or lotion onto the scalp after shaving in order to maintain the scalp’s natural moisture balance.
These tips will not only make shaving the head easier, but will also result in less irritation and fewer nicks and cuts.
