The Government of Japan Develops Computer Virus

Japan is developing a virus that is able to trace the source of cyber attacks and then neutralize the program. In addition, the virus is also equipped with devices to monitor and analyze attacks.

A computer virus is a computer program that can replicate or copy itself and spreads by inserting copies of itself into other programs or documents. Computer viruses can be analogous to a biological virus that spreads by inserting itself into living cells. Computer viruses can be destructive (for example by corrupting the data on the document), make computer users feel disturbed, and no effect at all.

Excerpted from the daily Yomiuri Shimbun, January 2, 2012, the weapon is a manifestation of a three-year investment projects whose value totaled 179 million yen (Rp21 billion) entrusted to the government in technology companies, Fujitsu Ltd..

Japan is not the first country to officially create cyber weapons. Prior to this, the United States and China is reported to have used a similar weapon in the practice of securing the country.

A number of Japanese government-owned computers at various embassies and consulates in 9 countries also experienced a virus attack in the middle of last year.

Currently, the virus was officially made in Japan in the middle of testing in the ‘closed environment’ to find out how best to use it.
