I have been working from home for 10 years and I have made some of the many mistakes that I have listed below:
- Believing that you don’t have to treat your at home job like a regular job
- Thinking that you can conduct your household work and your work at home business at the same time
- Thinking that you will see a steady income right away
- Believing in things that are too good to be true
The first two are common problems for most people when they are first starting out. I know that when I first started working from home I had visions of working in my nightgown and possibly even from bed, but that lasted for about a week and then I realized that I really wasn’t getting much done (except maybe catching up on my soaps). I also found myself being pulled into wanting to do my dishes, laundry and other necessary cleaning. There’s nothing wrong with get supper ready during the day or taking the dog out for a quick walk, but always remember that your work must come first.
Number three is probably one of the hardest one to deal with but if you give it time it will take care of itself. It definately takes a while to see the money come rolling in for all your hard work. If you are going to work for a company you will see income fairly quickly but you will also have to work shifts and the only real difference between that and working outside the home, is where you work. If you are working more for yourself, maybe writing or consulting it will take some time for you to get your name out there and to get steady work, but again, if you work hard it will happen.
Sometimes, especially when you aren’t making the money you were hoping to make, you find yourself thinking about looking into some of the “opportunities” that seem too good to be, just remember that if they seem that way they probably are. Almost any “opportunity” that requires you to pay them money is a scam and you will not make money. A few that do require money upfront but are still legitimate or some of the crafting companies. The main reason they require money up front is because they are sending you supplies. Once you send back a certain amount of finished products you get your money back.
I think one of the best things you can do once you begin thinking about working from home is to join a few forums about working from home because it will allow you to learn from those that have been working from home for years and many of the forums list job leads so you may be able to find more work.
I wish you luck in your search for work from home employment and I know that if you talk to others who do this and read everything you can find, you will succeed.
