Viagra – The Top 10 Fallacies

1. Viagra is a cure for Impotence

Viagra is used in the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction (impotence), but it is not a cure. Impotence can be caused by a number of factors, either physical or psychological. Viagra can help maintain an erection but it will not stimulate arousal.

2. Viagra increases sexual desire

Viagra does not affect sexual desire or libido whatsoever. In men it improves blood flow to the penis by dilating the arteries, therefore improving and helping maintain an erection. In women the increase in blood flow to the sexual organs may improve arousal, but not sexual desire.

3. Viagra is addictive

Viagra is not chemically addictive, however regular users may become psychologically or emotionally dependent.

4. Viagra can cause a heart attack

Provided that Viagra is taken under the approved supervision of a doctor, the risk of a heart attack is very low. Men who have recently suffered from heart attack, angina, arrhythmia, any cardiac problems, or have had recent heart surgery should not take Viagra. It is very important to take medical advice before considering the use of Viagra.

5. Viagra will make you go blind

Studies are still in process in relation to the condition known as NAION (non-arteric anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy). So far very few cases have been linked between NAION and men taking PDE-5 Inhibitors such as Sildenafil Citrate (the active ingredient in Viagra), and studies have been inconclusive so far.

6. Viagra causes Priapism

Priapism is a condition causing a prolonged, often painful erection which can last for four hours or more without sexual stimulation. Without immediate medical attention to drain the trapped blood in the penis it can lead to permanent scarring and erectile dysfunction. Providing that Viagra is not misused (taken to excess or combined with certain other drugs or medication), the risks are very low.

7. Increased doses of Viagra will give better erections

The standard recommended prescription for Viagra is 100mg per day. Exceeding this dose may lead to serious cardiac problems or priapism (see above).

8. Viagra is more effective when mixed with other drugs or medication

If Viagra is mixed with certain recreational drugs such as marijuana or cocaine, or combined with other erectile dysfunction treatments , it may lead to a number of possible problems. This includes increased chances of suffering from a heart attack or priapism (see above).

9. It’s perfectly safe to buy Viagra on the Internet

There are many sources to buy Viagra and Viagra alternatives online. However any site not providing consultation with a registered doctor should be avoided. There are a great number of websites selling unbranded substitutes which do not necessarily follow the rigorous testing that branded products have to adhere to. If you do buy over the internet, always buy from a reputable, regulated online pharmacy.

10. Cheaper Viagra alternatives are just as safe

Unless buying branded products such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra from a reputable pharmacy, you cannot be sure of the ingredients contained in cheaper products. This may lead to increased risk of associated health problems.
