Mumbai is known all over India to have the best of colleges and institutes offering degrees and diplomas in a variety of fields. Mumbai has a large number of Science, Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Medicine and Management colleges. Besides IIT, Mumbai, the city has some of the most famous Engineering colleges in the country. Engineering colleges other than these are not independent.

The colleges conduct the sessions for four years; however the candidate receives the degree from the University of Mumbai. The entry to the Engineering colleges in Mumbai is through the Common Entrance Test or the CET. The CET is an aptitude test based on concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics that helps the candidates get in to Engineering colleges run by the University of Mumbai. The test is generally held in the month of May and the courses begin in August. There is fierce competition among the candidates to get seats into the best engineering colleges of the city and many candidates lose out on their desired colleges by a matter of one mark.
