Westlife – Lighthouse

“This kind of love
Is more than a lifeline
For a man as weak as me
Who has no self-belief”

Westlife is back with a brand new single but for the last time. The single “Lighthouse” which is off their second greatest hits album was released on November 14, 2011 under RCA. The album contains 2 CDs of their hits and a bonus DVD of their music videos. Lighthouse is one of the four new songs featured in the album.

This song is their 26th UK single (31st internationally) and was written by John Shanks and Take That’s frontman Gary Barlow. It sounds interesting as they had a face-off last year with Take That in the UK X-Factor – actually a three-way boyband battle including JLS.

“You’re the light in the dark
You’re the seat in the park
You’re the lighthouse
You’re the lighthouse
That I need”

Lighthouse is a classic Westlife anthem. It may not be the usual slow-tempo ballad but you will feel the touch of Westlife with the piano intro, uplifting choruses, soaring melodies, powerful post middle-8 key change and harmony-filled split vocals of Shane and Mark backed by Kian and Nicky. The simple but stunning video filmed in South Africa and inspirational lyrics are just added attraction. The artwork is perfect for the end of their career as a band, as you see the sunset in the background. The B-side is called “Poet’s Heart” which is another classic. Westlife always gives their best in every single they release and Lighthouse is no-doubt an addition.

“You’re the key to the door
You’re the port in the storm
And I need to find a shore
When I can’t swim anymore
You always guide me back to solid ground
You’re my lighthouse”

This is a perfect song to perform in their final tour with the audience waving lighters in the air for reasons of celebration, praise and saying goodbye.

This however will fail to be their 15th #1 in the UK charts even if it deserves to be one. Westlife has never been good at downloads which account most of the record sales today. But we know what good music sounds like. It is nice having them around for this long and with a greatest hits album before calling it a day. The farewell tour concludes in Croke Park on June 23, 2012.

Really, the world will miss Westlife, our Lighthouse.
