You may be suffering from seasonal grass, ragweed or cedar allergies. April, May and June are peak times for pollen. To make your life easier and to lessen your symptoms, make some simple lifestyle changes.
Buy sunglasses with oversize lenses. When the lenses cover the whole eye area, they act a as barrier to protect your eyes from allergens floating in the air. On windy spring days, stay inside a bit longer or go out in the early morning or late evening when the air is damp and pollen is heavier. You will have less chance of it blowing into your eyes when the air is damp.
If the pollen counts in your area are high, take a day and go to the beach or lake. Plan a seaside getaway during the worst of the pollen season, as pollen counts are naturally lower near the water. Stay away from the mountains and other well “green” areas, as the pollen count will be very high. Especially if you have an allergy to grass or ragweed. It is not just the flowers you need to be aware of but many types of grasses and trees release pollen in the spring. Tall grasses and cedar trees can have higher pollen counts than flowers.
Reduce the number of allergens in your home. Take a trip to the hardware store and purchase a HEPA Filter for your vacuum cleaner. HEPA filters have been shown to trap 99 percent of allergens, significantly reducing your allergy symptoms. Change your pillowcases to dust blocking cases and dust your sleeping area with a damp dust cloth. Remove books and stuffed animals from your sleeping area, as both items trap and collect dust, which is filled with allergens and pollen.
Reduce being pollen into your home by removing your shoes before you enter the house. Dirt, pollen and other allergens can be tracked into your house on you shoes, your clothes and your hair. When working outside, wearing a hat on your head is recommended to prevent pollen from settling in your hair. To remove pollens from your hair and clothing, take a shower and wash your clothes daily or as soon as possible after you are inside the house to prevent spreading pollens and other allergens in the home.
Knowing where the pollen comes from and blocking them from entering your eyes, noses and lingering on your skin can help alleviate the attack, allowing you to breathe easier and suffer less.
