Contrary to popular belief, a school counselor is much more than an individual, who hands out college applications, makes schedule changes and meets with the troublemakers in the school. Professional school counselors serve a very important role in maximizing student success. School counselors promote equity and access to rigorous educational experiences for all students through leadership, advocacy and collaboration.

They work to promote a safe learning environment and help safeguard the human rights of all members of the school community. The formative years in a child’s life is a time when they form the basic concept of the world. This basic concept helps them when they become grownups. In this stage only, children develop decision making, communication and life-skills. It is the time when children’s concept about the school environment, their peers, family members and social groups are formed and get shaped.

Comprehensive developmental school counseling programs provide education, prevention and intervention services, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. It is very important to understand the basic needs and thought process of children during these formative years. The knowledge, thoughts and skills that children attain in the areas of academic, career and personal or social development during these elementary years serve as the key for future success.Counselors provide a supportive hand to the children who need guidance. Though teachers provide proper guidance to the children in the classroom, but some children need some additional help outside that. Moreover, the children do sometime need some help to understand about the higher course structure or need some counseling about their further studies.

Counselors have special training in how to help kids solve problems, make decisions, and stand up for themselves. The counselor is provided a special training and carries out an in-depth study of the scientific theories, which explain various cognitive processes that account for the basis of intricate human thought and action. Besides the theoretical and practical experience of the subject matter, it becomes essential and imperative for a counselor to develop certain personality traits like-empathy, ability to individualize every case, exercise mutual credibility and trustworthiness.
Now a day we are living in a more competitive world. In this world of growing competition, children are also getting pressurized. To cope up with the world spectrum, more and more activities are incorporated in the school curriculum.

Moreover, parents also want their children to be the best in every aspect of life apart from academics also. There are conflicts everywhere – conventional methods of study are under scrutiny, subject choices are manifold, job options are numerous, parental expectations are surmounting. No doubt school going children at one or the other phases have always been facing one or more of these conflicts, it’s the severity of these conflicts and the increasing dearth of emotional support in family that emerged as basic problems of children. A counselor in the school assists children to help themselves in all domains of their life -academic, emotional, personality development, interpersonal relationships, choice of subject and career. Research has shown that when schools and parents work together in a cooperative relationship that promotes student success, student academic success as well as the student’s emotional health is improved. However, it is important that information provided to parents is culturally congruent.
