How can you live your dream life if you don’t even know what it is? While there are people who have discovered their true calling early in their lives, there are still others who have difficulty identifying what their ultimate life goals are. That’s because they probably aren’t asking themselves the right questions. Here are a few of those questions to help you define what you really want to achieve in your life.
- What do you enjoy doing?
What do you enjoy doing with your spare time? It doesn’t have to be anything profound or earth-shaking, so don’t dismiss any of your hobbies as mundane or silly. It can by anything from stamp collecting to reading comics, blogging, doodling, or cooking. Make a list of all those things that you like to do when you have free time, and determine which one you’d love to do for a living. This could very well be one of the cornerstones of your dream life.
- What are you good at?
All of us are innately good at something, and that helps us figure out what our life goals are and how to achieve them. Ask yourself what you’ve always been good at. Maybe you’ve always had a knack for painting, or maybe you have that gift of leadership that allows you to talk to and rally people easily. Whatever it is, you should rediscover that gift and share it with the world!
- What sort of people do you like to work with?
Your dream life isn’t just about YOU – it’s about the people around you, too. Whether you like it or not, these people have a profound effect on you and your life, so you have to take them into consideration too. You have to make sure you actually enjoy working with the people at the office. Do you want to work with a boss who’s all business and will likely mentor you well? Or do you want to work in a more laid-back setting where your superiors let your creativity run free? These are things that you need to consider when defining your life goals.
- What tools do you want to work with?
Do you enjoy using a Mac to create digital art? Are you savvy with a specific word processing program that helps you write fantastic articles? Do you prefer playing the piano over the guitar? Knowing which medium or tool you prefer using when working on a project or one of your hobbies can provide you with a clue as to what kind of job you’d like to land.
- Where do you want to work?
You can’t achieve your dream life and fulfill your life goals if you don’t like the place you’re working in. Working in an environment that makes you feel claustrophobic, disgusted, or uncomfortable has a negative impact on your performance. Do you want to work at a regular office with uniform cubicles, or somewhere that’s more laid back and relaxing? Do you prefer to stay in one office, or do you prefer to travel and have meetings at coffee shops instead of conference rooms? Think about it!
The first step to achieving your dream life is to identify it, visualize it, and plan out what you’re going to do to achieve it. If you have yet to discover and really zero-in on your dreams, just ask yourself these simple questions. You may be surprised by what you discover.
