Adiponectin is a hormone secreted from the white adipose tissue. And this hormone is able to counter diabetes and obesity. When the body weight increases, the blood levels of adiponectin fall. These actions are achieved through the influences on the carbohydrate and fat metabolism.

·        Adiponectin decreases the synthesis of glucose in the liver. This process is the major contributor the blood glucose levels in between meals. This hormone also promotes the entry of glucose into the cells. These actions can counter the onset of diabetes.

·        Adiponectin counters obesity through its ability to promote the oxidation of fat.

Nuts Increase Adiponectin

Adiponectin also has the ability to reduce cardiovascular inflammation. It is this inflammation which is responsible for the building up of plaques within the coronary arteries. Several nutrients can influence adiponectin levels in the circulation in a positive way. The best examples for this are the omega-3-fatty acids. These fatty acids are present in fish oils. They are also found in significant quantities in nuts like walnuts. Omega-3-fatty acids increase the blood levels of adiponectin and thus, decrease insulin resistance. This, in turn, prevents the onset of type 2 diabetes. The increased circulating levels of adiponectin also prevent inflammatory reactions in the body reducing plaque building up in the arteries. This protects the heart.

Fiber Increases Adiponectin

Obesity is a fast increasing global malaise and obesity contributes to additional complications. One of the ways by which obesity can be countered is to increase the fiber component of the diet. Since fiber does not contribute calories, it can prevent weight gain and therefore, obesity. Fiber also increases the adiponectin levels in the circulation. Adiponectin because of its fat degrading action also aids the prevention of obesity.

The major contributors of fiber in the diet are plant based foods like fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are also good sources of the mineral magnesium. Magnesium is an essential mineral which has several roles in the body. Magnesium is also required for maintaining the blood levels of the obesity fighting hormone adiponectin. Thus, when you consume more vegetables and fruits, you get both fiber and magnesium both which support increase in adiponectin.
