Practice Yoga Nidra: For Self Relaxation!

Yoga is a way to better living. One can achieve harmony of mind & body through yoga. It ensures control over mind, emotions and physical presence. It’s an ancient Indian technique of integrating human personality at the physical, mental, moral and intellectual levels by means of Yogic Kriyas, Yogasanas, and Pranayama.

Yoga Nidra is a powerful relaxation technique. It induces complete physical and mental relaxation. During Yoga Nidra, one appears to be asleep but the consciousness would be functioning at a deeper level of awareness. Nidra in Sanskrit (ancient Indian language) means to Sleep. It’s a state of mind between wakefulness and sleep. It opens you to realize the subconscious mind.

How to do it: Firstly, lie down on a flat surface. Keep your legs wide and arms stretched. Head erect and eyes closed. Let loose if any part of the body is stressed. Just relax! Keep your mind free of thoughts (as far as possible). Lay down in a position as if you were going to sleep but do not sleep!

What to do after: Make a commitment in your mind. Repeat it within yourself. Now see the things around with closed eyes. Start feeling your own body from head to toe. Focus the concentration on one part of the body at a time. Feel the forehead, then eyebrow, eyes, centre of the eyebrows, ears, checks, nose, nostrils, chin… Feel you hand, fingers, nails, shoulder, chest, back, thigh, ankle, foot, toe, fingers…Now feel the whole head and body together. Your body is lying on the floor completely stable and relaxed. Now, feel the normal breathe while you are inhaling and exhaling. Feel the air going till your abdomen. Rewind all the joyous moments in your life. Feel the happiness again. Slowly return to your body, Turn to one side (your eyes still closed) and get up slowly. Rub both your palms and keep on your eyes. Slowly open your eyes. And start your day Fresh!
