What do you mean by the word Marriage?

The anthropological handbook Notes and Queries (1951) described marriage as “a union between a man and a woman such that a child born to the woman is the recognized legitimate offspring of both partners.”  We could say that marriage is the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife by legal commitments and religious ceremonies. Conservatives, especially here in the Philippines, often refuse to accept the recognition of same-sex marriage as a legal marriage in our country. On religious reasons, they only believe in traditional marriage. Having same-sex marriage here in the Philippines could insult the sacredness of marriage of the Holy Bible, for it does not state that one man with another man be in one. Biblically, the purpose of the marriage covenant is to bless the union of a man and a woman, and thus give a blessing to pro-creation. Hence, marriage is a religious sacrament in the Philippines. Religiously, same-sex marriage is forbidden in our country.

Since the Philippines is known for its conservative manner and beliefs, same-sex marriage is a very crucial or sensitive issue for us citizens and has been debated by many people especially the government officials. Some people and Filipino LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered) organizations want the same-sex marriage be legal as they don’t know God’s words, teachings and laws; yet some of them recognize the Lord. If the same-sex marriage is approved by the government, the LGBT can live freely having their rights for there would be no more discrimination among them anymore.

The Philippines doesn’t want to recognize same-sex marriage so the government officials submit bills to prevent it. According to Philippine Daily Inquirer, it was in 1998 when Senators Marcelo B. Fernan and Miriam Defensor Santiago submitted four bills that forbade the recognition of marriage within transgender individuals from the Philippines or abroad or between two people with the same biological sex. Last 2006, three anti-same sex marriage bills were submitted and are still pending before the Philippine Government. One of those who submitted bills were Senator Rodolfo Biazon and his son, Representative Rozano Biazon that marriage must be between a natural born male and a natural born female. In addition, The Philippine legal framework does not recognize marriages between persons of the same gender and the Family Code here in the Philippines defines marriage as a “special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of family life.” At present, September 26, 2011, the current president of the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino III, denies the he supports same-sex marriage and states that he is not yet ready to discuss the issue of gay marriage since the government has a lot of problems to solve especially the country’s poverty and corruption within the government.

In the Christian Catholic Church’s view, they say that God created a perfect partner for Adam, thus, He created Eve from Adam himself. It now concludes that God didn’t create a partner of Adam with another Adam. Intimacy between a man and a woman is the normal state of bonding because the design of the body God created complements and which also means that off springs may be born. According to some information and opinions from the web there are three references indicate that homosexual passion and acts are unnatural, shameful, contrary to sound doctrine and deny entrance to the Kingdom of God. Also the law of God is clear – that marriage is not a godly marriage if it is a same sex union.

Then again, what will be the effects if the same-sex marriage is valid in the Philippines? How will it affect the well-being of children? For some people worrying that same-sex marriage will be validated, the parenting styles of the opposite sex presenting could have different outcomes of their children. Same-sex marriage affects the children and confuses them about gender roles in our tradition, expectations from the society, and a-man-and-a-woman production of offspring. It is really difficult to teach the importance and traditions of the family when confusion is within their children. Only a man and woman can bear children for a man and a woman headed household has carried generations of people through life.

As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”
