In May I’m going to start a walking club but until then I’ve been working my way up to two mile walks so that I won’t be left behind when we do start group walking. If for some reason I couldn’t keep up I would feel terrible so I’m doing by best to condition my body to walking. It’s been a long winter for me as I’m sure it’s been the same for a lot of people in the country. I don’t want my walks to seem like work. I want to enjoy my walks by looking around and appreciating what nature has given to all of us. On my first walk I noticed all the new growth in the park. I believe this is a great time to walk because everything will seem so new after a long winter. What I found when I ventured outside and down to the park was a lot of other people doing the same thing. I was amazed at the people that drive to the park and then sit in their cars with their windows down. I want to be out walking on the paths and getting my heart rate up and clearing my lungs. I’m really not an outdoor person myself but I’ve decided that this is the year that I will change. I’m taking herbal classes and soon I will become certified. What I learned in class is that we need to be moving around and getting our blood flowing. It makes sense if you think about it. I’m not saying it will be easy but I am saying try to motivate yourself. Your body will thank you! I believe the buddy system will help you the most. Ask a friend or neighbor to walk with you. Companionship will make your walk so much more enjoyable. If your time is limited then maybe you can walk on your lunch hour with a co-worker. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated. That’s very important and of course the hotter it is the more water you will need. If you only have week-ends to devote to long walks in the park that’s okay because at least your moving your body and getting fresh air. That really is the most important factor in a good exercise program. As the flowers start to bloom you will find a lot of wild flowers in the parks. I’m going to take my digital camera with me on my walks and try to get some awesome pictures. I’m also going to buy myself a good walking stick and would suggest that you do the same. I met a man in the park that had two walking sticks and I watched him go down a hill with no trouble at all. Now I’m not saying you should be going down steep inclines but you never know when a walking stick may come in handy.
