Marie Callender's Meatballs & Sausage Marinara

Marie Callender’s Meatballs & Sausage Marinara is one of the fresh flavor steamer products I really enjoyu.  This brand has really come out with some great microwaveable meals in the past year, and this is one of them.

This meal has 460 calories and is prepared without preservatives.  It inclues rigatoni that has been made in a slow simmered sauce with meatballs and Italian sausage.  As a fresh steamer, it is heated in a way to keep as much of the flavor intact as possible. In this case, after microwaving for about 4 1/2 minutes, you take the steamer bowl that is the top part of the container and empty it into the bottom sauce bowl.  Just mix and enjoy.

I really have enjoyed the consistent quality and taste of this meal. There is even an extra plus for me in the fact that the sauce is essentially cooked separately from the rest of the meal.  The truth is that I am not all that crazy about sauce and too often buying a spaghetti meal means dealing with more sauce than I really like.  With this two-bowl cooking system, I actually can mix in just the amount of sauce that I prefer.  It is a great, unintentional perk of the steamer style.

Breaking down the ingredients, the meatballs are pretty good.  Yes, I have had better, but these are among the best I have ever had in a frozen food product.

I am not as crazy about the Italian sausage. It tastes okay, but it looks odd to me.  It is cut into circles that are somewhere between the size of a dime and a nickle. That’s okay, but it just looks unappealing. If I didn’t know what it was, I probably wouldn’t want to eat it.

The rigatoni is decent.  Every now and then not all of it is as tender as I would like my pasta, but most of the time, it is just fine.

So, on the whole, I really enjoy Marie Callender’s Meatballs & Sausage Marinara, and it is a product I buy multiples of when it is on sale.
