Overpopulation in the world today is not only presenting the environmental problem, but also other evils result from it. Due to increase in population day by day at an alarming rate, the dignity and nature of human life declines. Isaac Asimov wisely affirms: “”Which is the greater danger – nuclear warfare or the population explosion? The latter absolutely! To bring about nuclear war, someone has to DO something; someone has to press a button. To bring about destruction by overcrowding, mass starvation, anarchy, the destruction of our most cherished values-there is no need to do anything. We need only do nothing except what comes naturally – and breed. And how easy it is to do nothing.”
Asimov is quite right that starvation deaths and overcrowding are the direct result of overpopulation. The latest UN Population Reports give an inkling that in the near future, this will not only damage the ecosystem , but create more starvation deaths.
The world population is at present increasing by approximately 74 million people per year. The learned experts predict that the world population will reach 9.0 billion around 2050. From where food, water ,and other indispensable thing for survival of this huge population will come?
Another important thing to add is that the population explosion will take place in countries like China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other less developed countries in the world. The western developed countries will not be afflicted by this crisis.
“An exception is the United States population, which is expected to increase 44% from 305 million in 2008 to 439 million in 2050.”
It is very shocking that some writers find overpopulation a boon, and a very useful thing. Their logic is that it creates opportunities for greater wealth, internationl markets, and huge army of soldiers. Such writers overlook the loss of dignified living, and the destruction of eco-system.
We should never forget that overpopulation causes global warming. Many countries in the world will be afflicted with famine, if they are unable to control the crisis of overpopulation. If the children die of starvation due to shortage of food, the parents will suffer unbearable miseries. In india, the overpopulation problem is very serious. The farmers here depend on rains for their good harvest. If there is drought due to lack of rains, the farmers find it difficult to provide food to their children.
