Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) is a grass-root, not for profit organization of American Muslims actively working in the areas of social services, education and out-reach. About two decades ago ICNA established ICNA Relief in order to help fix the deterioration of family structure not just in the American Muslim community but also in the larger society. ICNA Relief launched ‘Muslim Family Services’, opened a Shelter Home for displaced women in New York City and offers many counseling services.
Today, we are here to express our profound shock and sorrow at the devastating murder of Aasiya Hassan;
To God we belong and to Him we return (Qur’an 2:156)
This despicable incident brings into focus the menace of domestic violence, which exists in our society. Domestic Violence is not only a crime against humanity – it is also a crime against Islam.
This murder is a painful reminder that there is still so much work to be done in our communities. There is no excuse for committing such a horrendous crime against a woman – the sad reality is that according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics – on average, every day, 3 women are murdered by either their husband or boyfriend.
Domestic violence occurs in every community regardless of race, religion or social status; it is no more prevalent in the Muslim community than in any other – according to the American Bar Association approximately 1.3 million women are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the United States.
We feel strongly that in order to address the issue of domestic violence we must work on fixing the family structure in our society. Domestic violence is a result of disregarding faith values and human dignity. The community has a bigger responsibility and compulsion to address this issue.
The Islamic Circle of North American and ICNA Relief USA are taking a stand against Domestic Violence in our communities and we ask that you join us in doing so. We are launching a campaign to raise awareness about Domestic Violence, we are in the process of developing informational materials and resource guides to be distributed in local area Masjids and communities, we’ll offer trainings to Imams and leaders in our communities so that the next time a woman seeks help she won’t be ignored or shunned.
The Qur’an states: “Among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquility with them and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are signs for those who reflect” (30:21)
To promote Muslim Family values, ICNA is also launching a nationwide campaign in the fall of 2009. We urge you to help us make this a successful campaign. The details of this campaign will be announced at the National Convention of ICNA on the Memorial Day weekend in Hartford, CT.
Prophet Muhammd (may the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said, “The best among the believers are those who are best with their families.”
